Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Offense erupts in Owls win over Albion

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In its second game of the season, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team erupted for 21 goals Monday afternoon and cruised through a non-conference home victory against the Albion College Britons.

The 21-2 loss was the first of the early season for the Britons, who saw their record slip to 2-1. On the other side of the field, the host Owls improved to 2-0.

The first six minutes of play did not give any indication of how things would unfold, as both teams were slow to get started. A goal from Blythe Karras at the 8:46 mark changed that, however, and opened the floodgates for Kenyon. Over the next four-and-a-half minutes of play, Lily Mason, Ella Murphy, Kate Lengel and Maddie Garner all scored for the Owls. The blitz left Kenyon with a 5-0 lead, a score that stood for the rest of the quarter.

Meanwhile, the Kenyon defense held up its end of the deal. Within the first quarter alone, the unit forced six turnovers and four failed clear attempts by Albion. Additionally, the Owls defense yielded just one Albion shot, which was saved by goalkeeper Nola Garand.

In the second quarter, the Kenyon offense maintained possession again for a large chunk of time. Lengel tossed in her second goal and was followed by two straight from Ashley Quinn. Mallory Brophy then scored and another tally from Caroline O'Neil gave Kenyon a 10-0 margin with 10:11 still left on the second-quarter clock.

One-minute and ten seconds later, Addie Pastor fired in Albion's first goal, only to have it neutralized by another goal from Mason. From there, the Britons would never get closer than 10 goals the rest of the way. Mason made sure of that by tacking on her third goal of the game, just 26 seconds after scoring her second.

Senior Tatumn Eccleston piled up four assists in the first half and Kenyon was sitting on a 14-1 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Owls took their foot off the gas a bit and shuttled reserve players in and out of the lineup. The team worked the clock before taking shots, but still managed three more goals in the third quarter and four more in the fourth.

In all, Kenyon outshot Albion 42-6 and won the draw control battle, 17-9.

Karras wound up leading the Kenyon offense with a six-point effort that included four goals and two assists. Mason also had four points with all four being goals. Murphy, Quinn, and Eccleston all logged four-points as well. Lengel and Quinn each scored three times.

Garand and Delaney Gallagher split time in front of the Kenyon cage. Neither, however, was tested very often. Both gave up one goal and both made one save.

Kenyon will now face its first road game of the season. That contest will be Wednesday at Capital University against the 2-0 Comets.
