Owls overwhelm Oberlin in conference opener

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The No. 27-ranked Kenyon College women's tennis team had little difficulty in dispatching a short-handed Oberlin College foursome Wednesday evening in the Jasper Tennis Center. The Owls, who were spotted a 3-0 lead, posted a 9-0 final to improve their early-season records to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference action.

Because Oberlin had just four players competing, Kenyon picked up default wins at No. 3 doubles and at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

As the matches got underway Eleni Lazaridou and Eleni Dakos  recorded Kenyon's first on-court point as they rolled to a 8-2 win in their No. 1 doubles match against Oberlin's top pairing of Marta Laska and Anna Pastore.

In the No. 2 doubles match, Erika Pontillo and Allaire Berl built an early 4-1 lead, but Oberlin's team of Dina Nouaime and Lydia Zafeiri battled back to tie the match three times. When it got to 7-7, Pontillo and Berl buckled down and rang up a 7-1 win in the tiebreaker.

Results didn't change much in singles play. Catriona MacIntosh kept momentum for Kenyon by rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Zafeiri in the No 4. match. Berl posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 and Lazaridou chalked up a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1

With the team victory already sealed for the Owls, Oberlin put up a fight in the final match at No. 3. Down a set, Nouaime rallied to even things up with Kenyon's Shadia Amado Aguad. The two went to a ten-point third-set and Amado Aguad held on for the win, preserving the Kenyon shut with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10) final.
