Game Recap: Softball |

Owls overpowered by Rams and Royals

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Two more tough opponents were too much to overcome for the Kenyon College softball team during Sunday's doubleheader at Fortune Road Athletics Complex. The Owls dropped a 9-4 decision in a morning game against Farmingdale State University and then returned in the afternoon, only to lose to No. 9-ranked Bethel College 13-1 in five innings.

The losses moved Kenyon's early season record to 1-11, while the wins improved Farmingdale to 1-0 and Bethel to 4-2. Last season, Farmingdale posted a 29-5 record and Bethel rang up a 37-7 mark. Both teams made appearances in the 2022 NCAA Division III Softball Championship.

Kenyon out-hit Farmingdale, 9-5, in the day's opening game. The Rams, however, capitalized on five Owl errors and six base on balls.

Farmingdale scored one run in each of the first two innings. In the top of the third, Kenyon got one of those runs back when Jesse Leener led off with a walk, moved to third on a double from Natalya Delsante, and then scored on a passed ball.

The Rams returned fire with six more runs over the next two innings and built an 8-1 lead.

To its credit, Kenyon did not throw in the towel. The Owls had four hits and scored two runs in the sixth inning and then smacked two more hits in the seventh to bring home one more run. One of those runs scored on another Farmingdale passed ball. The other two scored on a sacrifice fly from Sophia Lynch and an RBI groundout from Maddie Friday.

In the second game, against Bethel, Kenyon created its own problems again. This time four errors and seven walks propelled the Royals to the five-inning run-rule victory.

Bethel scored five runs in the first inning and then seven in the second. The big blow came from Jordyn Rudolph, who smashed a third-inning grand slam over the left field fence.

Kenyon's game-two offense amounted to one run on four hits. The run was manufactured in the third inning with Delsante reaching base via a Bethel error. After Delsante advanced to second on a groundout, Allison McCutchen drove her home with a single up the middle.

In the two games combined, Nicole Archambeau led Kenyon at the plate with a 3-for-7 effort. She continues to lead all Kenyon batters with a .375 batting average. McCutchen, Delsante, Friday and Maeve McLaughlin each had two hits on the day.

In the pitcher's circle, starter Sofia Zayas took the game-one loss in two innings of work. Amanda Harris started game two and was strapped with the loss after going one-and-two-thirds of an inning.

Kenyon has four more games left in its spring-break schedule. The next two will be Monday in a doubleheader against Arcadia University. Game one is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
