FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- The Kenyon College baseball team clicked on all cylinders after a couple of days off. The well-rested Owls orchestrated an expedited game against the previously-unbeaten Lasell University Lasers (4-1), winning 12-2 in a game that was called due to run rule after seven innings.
The 10-run victory is Kenyon's second this season, and the win boosts the team's record to 6-3. The Owls have been outstanding offensively this season, averaging 9.0 runs per game overall and an impressive 11.8 when they win.
Seven Owls notched multi-hit games, leading to a season-high 19 knocks for Kenyon. Just five hits went for extra bases as batters passed the baton and made big things happen while playing small ball. Dustin Lee led the way with game-highs of four hits and three runs batted in, going 4-5 with a run scored and a triple. Edwin Groff and Kyle Dwyer posted matching stat lines, going 3-5 with two runs and two RBIs, though Groff tripled while Dwyer doubled. Drew Robinson, Tripper Capps, Stephen Carr, and Parker Ellis all had two hits. Capps (3) and Robinson (2) scored multiple runs, while Carr compiled two RBIs.
Kenyon's defense had a shaky second inning, but it was smooth sailing the rest of the way for Frank Lynch and the gang. The Owls gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits and an error in the bottom of the second, but they allowed just four hits the rest of the game. Even then, three of those hits came in the fourth frame as Kenyon locked down the high-scoring Lasers.Â
Lynch earned the win after allowing two runs on seven hits in four innings while securing seven strikeouts without a walk. Kenyon's relievers did not allow a baserunner as Sam Richards struck out two in two innings before Abe Wingfield rung up one batter in an inning of work.
The game did not look to be going Kenyon's way early after the Owls left two runners on base in each of the first two innings before Lasell took an early lead. The Lasers went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second, but the Owls responded with three in the third and scored in every inning for the rest of the game.Â
RBI triples from Groff and Lee that sandwiched an RBI groundout from Capps put Kenyon up 3-2. Gaynor brought a run home with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and an RBI single by Carr in the fifth made it a 5-2 ballgame.
The Owls doubled their run total their next time up after posting five runs on six hits in the sixth inning. Groff, Dwyer, Lee, Carr, and Ellis all hit RBI singles to increase the advantage to 10-2. Three straight two-out singles helped Kenyon tack on a pair of unearned runs in the seventh after Dwyer and Lee knocked in runs after Nate Rosen reached on a leadoff error. Wingfield clinched the win with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, striking out the last batter to end the game due to run rule with Kenyon up 12-2.
Kenyon has a quick turnaround with a doubleheader on deck tomorrow, March 16. The Owls will take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent (6-3) at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on their penultimate day at the Bob Gladwin Baseball Complex at Lawnwood.
