FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Playing in their 12th and final game at the Bob Gladwin Baseball Complex at Lawnwood, the Kenyon College baseball team finished their spring break slate on a high note with a dominant 15-2 win over Marywood University. The Owls improved to 9-3 through a dozen games, finishing their Florida campaign on a four-game winning streak after prevailing over the Pacers (6-5).
The 13-run margin matched Kenyon's largest win of the season, and the team's 15 runs are the second-most behind a 16-3 win over Thiel College on March 8. The Owls have outscored opponents by an outrageous 40-8 mark over the last four games despite three of the games going just seven innings.
Kenyon's offense opened the game with five runs in the second inning and never looked back. The Owls sent nine hitters to the plate in the frame, notching four hits, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. Kyle Dwyer, Nate Rosen, and Drew Robinson all recorded RBIs before Malcolm Gaynor hit a two-out, two-RBI single to cap the scoring.
Kenyon scored in every subsequent inning except the sixth, adding two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, three more in the seventh, and one in the eighth in their final at-bats.
Despite a whopping five Marywood errors, 13 of Kenyon's 15 runs went down as earned. Ten of the 13 Owls to get an at-bat tallied a hit to give Kenyon 15 base knocks across eight offensive innings. Gaynor had the biggest game of the bunch, going 3-4 with a sacrifice fly en route to a career-high four runs batted in. The junior also scored twice, tying for the game-high with Dwyer, Tripper Capps, and Parker Ellis.Â
Edwin Groff and Dustin Lee joined Dwyer and Gaynor as Owls to compile multiple hits and multiple RBIs. Lee was 2-4 with three RBIs, while Groff hit 2-5, brought in two runs, and came around to score.
Groff also pitched a scoreless inning in relief as five Owls combined to close out the Pacers. Jackson Niedel put Kenyon on the right track by providing 4.1 scoreless innings in his first start of the season. The first-year struck out six and walked three while allowing just three hits. Sam Howell recorded his second win this season after 1.2 scoreless innings in which he struck out a batter and allowed one hit. Andrew Catron rang up two batters in a scoreless inning, while Noah Rosenberg struck out two, walked two, and allowed two runs in the ninth.
After nearly two weeks in Florida, the Owls will fly north ahead of their home opener. Kenyon is scheduled to host doubleheaders against the Illinois Institute of Technology (5-4) on both Saturday, March 25, and Sunday, March 26. On both days, the first pitch is set for noon in Gambier, Ohio.
