Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Owls complete perfect non-conference schedule

ALBION, Mich. -- With Sunday's 17-8 win at Albion College, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team not only avenged a one-goal loss to the Britons one season ago, but ran their current record to 7-0. That's the best start to a season since the 2000 team won its first ten games.

Following a tight first quarter, the Owls wrested control in the second frame. Building off a 3-2 advantage, Kenyon scored six straight in a nine-minute span. First-year David Chintala got the run started with an unassisted goal, Rollins Heath fired in a man-up goal, and then Chase MacCartee made it 6-2 at the 7:47 mark of the quarter.

Off the next faceoff, Finn Murray scooped up a ground ball, ran through the heart of Albion defense, and whipped in his first goal of the season. Kenyon then got a big save from first-year goalkeeper Adam Hall and raced the other way to record another Chintala goal. Two minutes later, Murray scored again and the Kenyon cushion expanded to seven.

The Britons (4-3) did not call its quits. They answered with five straight, scoring three times before the break and then two more to open the third quarter. Sam Puzevic and Brendan Mercier both scored twice and got Albion back to within two goals of the Owls.

That run was short-lived, though. Kenyon wound up outscoring Albion 5-3 in the third quarter and took a 14-8 advantage into the final 15 minutes.

Hall and the defense took over from there. Despite 15 shots from Albion, Kenyon did not yield a fourth-quarter goal. Hall made seven saves in the quarter and posted a season-high 17 saves for the game.

In addition to deploying an effective offense, Kenyon did all the little things right. The Owls out-hustled the Britons, 42-26, on ground balls and won 23-of-29 faceoffs. Sophomore Thomas Nelson was 18-for-21 at the center of the field and ran his season-long win percentage to .778.

Senior Joe Boesel, who scored twice in the first quarter, scored two more times in the second half and led Kenyon with five points on four goals and an assist. Chintala finished with three goals and an assist, while Jack Giuffre handed out three helpers. Both Evan Bongers and Heath had two goals and an assist.

Kenyon, which out-shot Albion 53-44, will now enter North Coast Athletic Conference play with its next game at home Saturday against Ohio Wesleyan University.
