Owls outlast Eagles, claim 5-3 win

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a match that came down to the wire at Jasper Tennis Center on Friday evening, the No. 17-ranked Kenyon College men's tennis team prevailed 5-3 over the No. 34-ranked Eagles from the University of Mary Washington.

Kenyon had to bounce back from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play. Mary Washington won the No. 3 match, 8-3, and the Owls countered with an 8-4 win from Eliezer Gonzalez and Paulo Pocasangre Kreling at No. 2. About 20 minutes later, the No. 1 match ended with the Eagles posting an 8-5 victory.

When play shifted to singles action, Kenyon quickly evened up the team score at 2-2 after Luis Andres Platas finished off the No. 3 match, topping Brock Ladehoff 6-3, 6-4. Shortly after that, Rishil Kondapaneni gave the Owls a 3-2 team lead after he knocked off Andrew Watson 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 2 match.

The Kenyon advantage didn't last long, though. Mary Washington's No. 1 player, Rishi Charan Shankar, rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory to even things up at 3-3 on the team scoreboard.

At No. 4 singles, Pocasangre Kreling brought Kenyon one point away from clinching the team win. He pulled out a 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 decision against Artis Hart in a match that lasted a little longer than two hours.

That left two matches on the courts with Kenyon needing just one more win and Eric Zhang delivered it. His clinching victory came at No. 5, where he defeated Peter Leese 7-5, 6-3.

The last match, No. 6, was abandoned after Kenyon's clinching point was registered.

The victory improved Kenyon to 6-9, while the loss dropped Mary Washington to 6-5.

The Owls still have two more matches on deck this weekend. Tomorrow, they'll take on Ohio Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. and then Sunday they'll face Wittenberg University at noon.
