Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Owls fall to top-ranked Maroons

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- A terribly difficult schedule continued Saturday for the Kenyon College men's tennis team, which dropped a neutral-site, 7-2 decision to the No. 1-ranked Maroons from the University of Chicago.

Kenyon, now 1-5, has lost four matches in a row. Three of those four were to opponents that owned national top-10 ranks. On the other side of the net, Chicago ended a brief two-game skid with the win and improved its season record to 8-2.

The Owls got off to a decent start with Luis Andres Platas and Eric Zhang teaming up to record an 8-5 win against Derek Hsieh and Andrei Leonov in the No. 1 doubles match. Behind them in the lineup, Eliezer Gonzalez and Paulo Pocasangre Kreling nearly added another Kenyon win, but they were edged, 8-7, in a tiebreaker against Pat Otero and Jack Wong in the No. 2 doubles match.

Up 2-1 after doubles, Chicago went on to control singles competition, dropping only one match. That match was won by Kenyon sophomore Rakkan Audeh, who posted a 6-3. 1-6, 6-1 victory over Wong in the No. 6 battle.

The Maroons swept the top four singles matches in straight sets. At No. 5, Pocasangre Kreling gave Marek Michulka a run for his money. The two split the first sets and then Michulka outlasted Pocasangre Kreling in the third set, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9).

Kenyon will now head to Florida to play a series of spring-break matches in Orlando. The team's busy slate includes seven matches, with five of them against nationally-ranked opponents.
