Game Recap: Softball |

Pair of eights dealt in doubleheader loss

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Kenyon College softball team gave up eight runs in both of its spring-break games Thursday at the Fortune Road Athletics Complex. The Owls opened the day with an 8-0 loss to Husson University and then closed the day with an 8-3 loss to No. 21-ranked University of Rochester.

Despite three hits from leadoff hitter Natalya Delsante, the Owls never got on track against the Husson Eagles. Delsante started the game with a single, added another single in the third inning and then ripped a double to left center in the fifth inning. Kenyon's only other hit in the game was a fourth-inning single from Madison Buckwalter.

Husson (5-4) scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back. A walk, two singles and a passed ball allowed the Eagles to chalked up those first two runs.

In the third inning, Husson broke the game wide open. The Eagles sent eight batters to the plate against Kenyon starting pitcher Amanda Harris. That group used three singles, two stolen bases, and an error to plate five runs.

One more unearned run in the fourth gave the Eagles an 8-0 lead. Kenyon could not respond in the top of the fifth, so the game ended early due to the run-rule.

Harris gave up all eight runs, but due to a pair of Kenyon errors, three of those runs were unearned. She walked three and struck out five.

In Thursday's second game, the Owls held their own against the nationally-ranked Yellowjackets. With Sofia Zayas taking over pitching duties, the game went scoreless through four innings. In the fifth, however, Rochester, using a little help from the Kenyon defense, scored twice. The Yellowjackets put down two sacrifice bunts and capitalized on a single and a Kenyon error to take a 2-0 lead.

The Owls got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Arianna Jalomo led off the inning with a single to left field. When Allison McCutchen put down a sacrifice bunt to move Jalomo over, Jalomo didn't settle for one bag, she went first to third. Kenyon's next batter, Sophia Lynch ripped a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Jalomo.

Within one run, the Owls began to come unglued. Rochester (5-5) sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth inning and scored six times. The Yellowjackets had just four hits in the inning, but three of them were doubles. They also got a helping hand from Kenyon, which committed two more errors, hit a batter, and walked two.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Owls tallied two more runs after Delsante singled again and was followed up by a two-run homer to left field struck by Buckwalter. That was Buckwalter's third home run in the past five games. On the day, she was 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Delsante finished the doubleheader 4-for-6 with one run scored.

Kenyon (1-7) will get back at it tomorrow with games against University of Mount Union at 11:30 a.m. and against College of Saint Benedict at 2 p.m.
