Owls thrash Tigers to stay flawless

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team made quick work of Wittenberg University, taking down the Tigers 18-3 in enemy territory. No. 19/22 Kenyon jumped out to a 13-1 first-half lead before cruising to an expedited victory, improving to 11-0 and 2-0 against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foes.

The Owls are one of just three undefeated NCAA Division III teams remaining, and they compiled their second-largest margin of victory this season against Wittenberg (2-10, 0-2 NCAC). Kenyon was clicking on all cylinders as its offense, tied for 26th in scoring amongst DIII teams, scored two more than its season average, while the defense allowed less than half its average mark of 6.6, which is tied for seventh in the nation.

Caroline O'Neil ignited the Kenyon offense with the game's first goal and scored two of Kenyon's first three. The Owls built a four-goal lead before Wittenberg broke through after 10 minutes, but Kenyon took complete control over the next 35 minutes. Kenyon scored 14 straight goals, adding three in the first period, six in the second, and five in the third. Wittenberg recorded the only two fourth-quarter goals after Kenyon had emptied the benches.

O'Neil led Kenyon with four points, finishing with three goals and one assist. Blythe Karras, Tatumn Eccleston, and Ali Hatfield all tallied three points as Karras and Hatfield went for two goals and one dime, while Eccleston added three assists to extend her team-leading total to 23. Eccleston also picked up a game-high five ground balls, while Karras tied for the team lead with two caused turnovers.

In goal, Nola Garand picked up the win after securing a save and allowing a goal in 30 minutes of action. Delaney Gallagher and Caroline James each saw action in the net, and Wittenberg scored once against each Owls keeper.

Eleven different Owls put the ball in the back of the net against the Tigers, tying a season-high. Kenyon outshot Wittenberg 34-8 despite each squad securing 12 draw controls, and 13 extra Tigers' turnovers (28-15) helped the Owls grab 12 more ground balls (30-18).

Up next, the Owls head to Alliance, Ohio, for their final non-conference contest this season. Kenyon is set to take on the University of Mount Union (8-2) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 15.
