Owls hang in early, but Scots sweep twin bill

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College softball team hung tough against The College of Wooster while hosting a doubleheader, but the Owls could not overcome the Fighting Scots on either end of the twin bill.

After Allison McCutchen sat Wooster down 1-2-3 to open game one, Natalya Delsante started the day with a single in Kenyon's first at-bat. The base hit was one of nine game-one hits for the Owls, but Wooster managed to strand six Owls on base as Kenyon could only muster three runs off of the nine hits and two Wooster errors. The performance was a precursor to the second half of the doubleheader when Kenyon scored three runs on nine hits again.

McCutchen and the Kenyon defense bent but did not break early in the first game. The Owls conceded two runs in the second before stranding two runners, and they repeated the feat in the fourth frame.

Between the Wooster scores, the Kenyon offense kept the Owls in the game early. Maeve McLaughlin doubled to lead off the bottom of the second before Sophia Lynch brought her home on an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the third frame, Nicole Archambeau hit a two-out double before coming around to tie the game on an error in the next at-bat.

Delsante helped Kenyon answer Wooster's two-run fourth frame with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the inning, but 4-3 is as close as Kenyon would come. Wooster scored in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-3 lead, and a four-run seventh put Kenyon away 10-3.

Arianna Jalomo helped Kenyon immediately bounce back and jump ahead in the second inning. The first-year led off the inning with her first extra-base hit this season, a home run to left field. The round-tripper put the Owls ahead 1-0 for their first lead of the day.

However, the Fighting Scots quickly battled back with three runs in the top of the third inning, doing their damage on three hits and an error. Wooster added a run in the fourth on a wild pitch to go up 4-1, and a three-run homer in the top of the fifth put the visitors ahead 7-1.

Jalomo kept up her strong performance at the plate with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the inning, but Wooster ended the game with an 8-3 edge after scoring in the seventh. The first-year went 2-3 with three RBIs and a run in game two after a 1-3 game-one showing. McLaughlin was the only Owl to go for multiple knocks in each contest, posting a 2-3 mark on each end of the twin bill.

With the losses, Kenyon fell to 1-23 overall this season and is still looking for their first win against North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) competition in six tries. With the wins, Wooster improved to 15-9 and 3-1 in the NCAC.

Up next, Kenyon heads to Columbus, Ohio, to compete against Capital University (8-12) on Sunday, April 16. The doubleheader between the Owls and the hosting Comets is set to start at 1 p.m.
