Owls orchestrate offensive onslaught for 28-0 win

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team headed to Hiram College and collected its largest win of the season. The Owls orchestrated one of their most prolific offensive games in program history, beating the Terriers (5-8, 0-4 NCAC) 28-0 for Kenyon's fourth straight North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory.

The Owls needed very little time to take control of the game. Gavin Gumucio contributed to three goals over a 24-second spurt, assisting Rollins Heath and Nathan Kissela to get Kenyon on the board before scoring twice on assists by Jack Giuffre to up the advantage to 4-0.

Through 15 minutes, Gumucio amassed a whopping eight points after four goals and four assists. The one-quarter total shattered the first-year's previous best marks of three points, two goals, and two assists. Most importantly, the Owls led 11-0 after the opening period. David Chintala poured in four goals in the first period to increase his team-leading total to 38, and Kenyon out-shot Hiram 27-0.

Kenyon's 11-goal opening onslaught set a new season-high for goals in any quarter. The Owls' previous-best mark came against Adrian College on March 15 when the Owls scored seven goals in the first frame.

The Owls did not relent in the second quarter against Hiram. Kenyon added nine goals to extend their lead to 20 at halftime. Hill Carter paced the Owls with two goals, but it was a balanced effort as eight players found the back of the net.

Kenyon completely shut out the Terriers through one half of play as the Owls took 51 shots while holding Hiram without an attempt. Kenyon also posted a 30-6 advantage in ground balls and turned the ball over just three times compared to Hiram's 14, including six caused by Kenyon. The 20-point total set a new single-game season high for the Owls, who scored 19 over four quarters against Wittenberg University earlier this week.

Hiram's first shot came at the 13:25 mark in the third quarter, and the attempt nearly went in before bouncing off the crossbar. The Terriers' next shot was saved by Jack McClellan, who was getting his first action in goal for the Owls this season. Despite the close calls, Kenyon shut out Hiram 5-0 in the penultimate frame.

Kenyon clinched a 28-0 road victory when the final horn sounded. The 28 goals set a new season-high for an NCAC team and tied for the fourth-most goals in Kenyon history. Overall, 17 Owls notched a goal in the contest.

Up next, Kenyon hosts its final home game of the season when the Owls welcome The College of Wooster (11-1, 2-1 NCAC) to The Field at Benson Bowl at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19.
