Owls perfect in NCAC, take regular-season title

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Following Saturday's 8-1 victory at DePauw University, the Kenyon College women's tennis team completed a perfect 6-0 conference slate and claimed sole ownership of the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular-season championship.

The Owls, ranked No. 32 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, will now take their unblemished conference record, as well as their 16-4 overall record, into the NCAC Tournament, a three-day event that starts Friday at Denison University. The regular-season championship also makes the Owls the No. 1 seed in the tournament, whose winner gains the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Kenyon didn't have much trouble with the host Tigers on Saturday. In fact, the Owls swept all six singles matches. First-years Eleni Lazaridou, Allaire Berl, and Shadia Amado Aguad remained at the top half of the team's lineup and all three produced straight-set wins.

The other half of the team's lineup saw some change. Sophomore Lalasa Nagireddy moved up to No. 4 and cranked out a 6-2, 6-1 win. Senior Erika Pontillo jumped into the No. 5 spot and posted a 7-5, 7-5 win. Rounding out singles play, junior Irina Beshentseva took over the No. 6 spot and produced a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Prior to sweeping singles, the Owls won two of the three doubles matches. In the No. 1 match, Lazaridou and Berl cruised to an 8-1 win. That pairing is now 8-0 this season. At No. 2, Amado Aguad and Nagireddy pulled out an 8-7 (7-4) win.

Following those results, DePauw's overall team record slid to 4-14, while its NCAC mark dropped to 0-5.
