Brophy kick-starts Kenyon win over Wooster

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team scored the first goal of Tuesday's game at Kenyon College. Not long after that, sophomore Mallory Brophy rallied the No. 21-ranked Owls, who zipped past the Fighting Scots and recorded a 20-8 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win.

Brophy, who led all players with four goals, two assists, and six points, netted Kenyon's first goal of the game. She assisted on the team's third goal and then scored the fourth, as the Owls turned a 1-0 deficit into a 7-1 lead in a matter of eight-and-a-half minutes.

Wooster never got closer than five goals the rest of the way, as Kenyon opened an 8-2 lead after one quarter of play and a 10-3 lead after two quarters.

The Owls' seven-goal run in the first quarter was reinforced by another seven-goal run that started at the end of the second quarter and carried until the 5:13 mark of the third quarter.

A dozen different players logged at least one point and nine scored at least one goal for Kenyon during the lopsided victory. Senior Caroline O'Neil matched Brophy's four-goal output, while first-year Spencer Kirsch tacked on three goals, as did junior Kate Lengel. First-year Lily Mason scored twice and senior Tatumn Eccleston posted two assists.

It wasn't all about the offense, however. The Kenyon defense, including starters and reserves, held Wooster to well below its normal output. The Fighting Scots came into the game averaging a conference-best average of 17.3 goals per game. Kenyon allowed just eight goals on 18 shots, a season-low for Wooster.

The Fighting Scots also started the game with four players who had 40 or more points on the season. Against Kenyon, those same four combined for just five points on five goals. Kenzie Morris led the way, tallying three for the Fighting Scots.

Backing up the solid defensive effort was sophomore goalkeeper Nola Garand, who made six saves in the win. She now carries a 7.00 goals against average and .500 save percentage. Both those numbers sit atop of the NCAC charts.

The win moved Kenyon to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC. It also set up a showdown on Saturday, when the Owls travel to Denison University to take on the rival Big Red, also 3-0 in the NCAC.

The other side of Tuesday's result dropped Wooster to 10-3 overall and 1-2 in conference competition.
