Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Overtime goal from Karras caps thrilling Kenyon win

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Trailing 12-10 in a crucial conference contest at Denison University on Saturday, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team scored the final two goals of regulation and then got an overtime game-winner from sophomore Blythe Karras, who put away the Big Red, 13-12.

The victory put Kenyon in the driver's seat for a second consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championship. With two conference games still to be played, Kenyon is atop the conference standings with a 4-0 record, while Denison slipped to second place with a 4-1 mark.

Conference records aside, the Owls are now 14-0 overall and tied the program record for longest win streak, which was previously set by last year's team.

Kenyon dominated most of the first half of play against Denison and built leads of 6-2 after one quarter and 8-5 after two. The Big Red, however, made the right adjustments, especially on the defensive end, and outscored the Owls 5-1 in third-quarter play. The Big Red rode that momentum into the final quarter of play and gained leads of 11-9 and 12-10.

That second two-goal margin came with just 4:49 left in the contest. Kenyon then won two very important draw controls and turned them both into goals. Mallory Brophy won the draw following Denison's 12th goal, and, about 40 seconds later, Caroline O'Neil fed a pass to Julia Losey, who scored with 4:16 left on the game clock.

Brophy then went out and won the next draw control, too. When Kenyon set up shop in Denison's defensive zone, the Big Red got slapped with a yellow card, sending one player to the sideline. Kenyon took advantage and, at 3:21, O'Neil tied things up after scoring off an assist from Spencer Kirsch.

Both teams had one final shot in regulation to win it, but both goalkeepers came up with clutch saves, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Kenyon got another huge draw control, this time for Losey. It set up the only offensive possession needed. One minute and 11 seconds in, Karras broke loose for the game-winner. Collecting a pass behind the Denison net, Karras moved to her right and curled around the left side of the cage. She swerved past a defender and gave herself a clear path to convert a one-on-one with the goalkeeper from close range.

That was Karras' only goal of the game and her 14th of the season. O'Neil led the way for the Kenyon offense, racking up team-highs of three goals, two assists, and five points. Kate Lengel also scored three times, and Kirsch finished with two goals and an assist.

Nola Garand got the start in goal for Kenyon and made a dozen saves in about 47 minutes of work. She was relieved early in the fourth quarter by Delaney Gallagher, who let just one goal in and made three huge saves.

Kenyon, one of just three undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division III, will try to keep things rolling along during its next game, which will be at home Tuesday against Oberlin College.
