GAMBIER, Ohio -- Playing at home for the final time in the regular season, the No. 19/22-ranked Kenyon College women's lacrosse team orchestrated an 18-4 win over Oberlin College. The win was the Owls' 15th straight, setting a new program record for the longest win streak. Kenyon kept their record flawless at 15-0 and 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while the Yeowomen fell to 7-8 (1-4 NCAC).
The Owls converted goals on their first two offensive possessions, quickly going ahead 2-0. Kenyon's top three scorers contributed to the early scoring as Tatumn Eccleston assisted Caroline O'Neil on the first score before a solo shot from Kate Lengel. Kenyon had to make an early defensive stand as they faced a free position shot between the early goals, but Nola Garand held firm and secured the save.
Kenyon ran the lead to five midway through the first period, but Oberlin bounced back with a goal that snuck past Garand. Julia Losey had a couple of point-blank looks, but the Yeowomen's Janny McCormick stood strong with some excellent saves. However, Kenyon's offensive pressure broke through late in the frame. Mallory Brophy sliced through the Oberlin defense, taking it all the way in to put the Owls ahead 6-1 through one quarter.
The Owls scored the first five goals of the second quarter before a late score from the Yeowomen. Garand was in position for the save, but Oberlin's Alee Holman-Evans surprised herself and the Kenyon defense when her entry pass from the top of the circle sailed into the top left corner of the net. Losey helped Kenyon bounce back on the other end, scoring on a free position shot just before halftime to put Kenyon ahead 12-2.
The lead swelled to 15-2 after the Owls shut out the Yeowomen in the third period. Oberlin struck first in the final frame, but Kenyon's Maddie Garner grabbed the ensuing draw control, ran the ball into the attacking zone, and scored after a give-and-go with Blythe Karras to restore Kenyon's 13-goal lead.
Karras connected on a goal of her own on the next possession, her first of the game. A few minutes later, Lily Mason's fourth goal made it an 18-3 game. The free position shot marked the Owls' final goal, but Oberlin scored once more on another free position look. Overall, each of the Yeowomen's four goals came on free position shots.
Mason mustered a game-high four goals, matching a season-high for the first-year. She also added three draw controls and a pair of ground balls. Nine Owls finished with goals in the game. Spencer Kirsch tallied three scores, while Garner, Lengel, Losey, and O'Neil finished with two goals apiece. O'Neil, the reigning NCAC Athlete of the Week, added two assists, tying Eccleston for the team-high and pushing her conference-best points total to 61.
In goal, Garand improved to 13-0 after racking up four first-half saves. Delaney Gallagher closed out the win, tallying three saves over the final two frames.
The Owls conclude the regular season on Saturday, April 29, on the road at DePauw University (10-3, 2-2 NCAC). The game is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start.
