Owls fall in NCAC doubleheader with Denison

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Sunday afternoon at the Softball Complex, the Kenyon College softball team got the bats going early in a doubleheader with Denison University. The Owls, however, couldn't keep it going and lost by scores of 15-8 and 11-0.

In game one, Kenyon starting pitcher Amanda Harris got two quick outs to start things off, but then yielded two singles and a three-run homer to Jacqui Abogado. The Owls offense bounced right back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. Natalya Delsante and Maeve McLaughlin got on base by a single and a double, respectively. Delsante later came around to score on a passed ball and McLaughlin scored on a single from Arianna Jalomo. Two batters later, Allison McCutchen singled home Jalomo.

Denison then tacked on two runs in the third inning, but Kenyon answered again. Using a couple of Big Red errors and an RBI single from Jillian Messinger, the Owls knotted the game at 5-5.

In the fifth inning, Denison scored seven runs on six hits and this time Kenyon had no answer. Three of the Big Red hits were doubles, as the visiting team jumped out to a 12-5 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Big Red added three more runs to make the margin 10.

Kenyon bats made a little more noise in the bottom of the seventh inning with RBI hits from Madison Buckwalter and Persy Hort, as well as a sacrifice fly from Messinger. That cut the deficit to seven, but that's where it stayed.

Buckwalter finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. McCutchen, Jalomo, and Delsante all finished 2-for-4, as the Owls tied a season-high with a dozen hits.

In game two, Denison bats went back to work, tacking a two on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Brooke Surbaugh and Abogado had the RBI hits off of McCutchen, Kenyon's starting pitcher.

The Big Red expanded their lead in the third, scoring three times, including another home run from Abogado, who drilled a two-run shot over the leftfield fence. It was her second home run of the day and seventh of the season.

In the fourth, Abogado laced a bases-loaded double to left center, moving the Denison lead to 7-0. Over the course of the twinbill, Abogado was 4-for-6 with four runs scored and nine RBI.

The Big Red continued hitting in the fourth inning and put up six more runs, extending their lead to 11-0. Meanwhile, Kenyon batters could not solve Surbaugh, Denison's starting pitcher, who went all five innings. She allowed two hits in the first inning and then retired the next 13 batters in a row before yielding a two-out single to Hort in the bottom of the fifth. Overall, Surbaugh struck out six and didn't walk any.

In addition to Hort's single, Kenyon also got a single from Delsante and from McLaughlin.

The losses dropped Kenyon to 1-27 overall and 0-10 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The wins moved Denison to 15-13 overall and 7-3 in the NCAC.
