Kenyon downs DePauw, claims another NCAC title

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- For the second straight season, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team earned the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular-season championship. The Owls locked up sole possession of the conference crown after defeating the DePauw University Tigers, 20-4, on the road Saturday afternoon.

The victory extended Kenyon's program-record win streak and completed the first-ever undefeated regular season (16-0) in team history. Additionally, the NCAC regular-season championship for the Owls is the third in program history and it makes the Owls the No. 1 seed in next week's four-team NCAC postseason tournament, which will start with a Wednesday home game against the very same DePauw team.

As excited as the Owls were to complete an undefeated regular season, they had to display some patience Saturday due to a lightning delay that lasted more than an hour. Prior to the delay, Kenyon raced out to an 8-2 lead on the strength of three goals from Mallory Brophy and two from Caroline O'Neil. O'Neil also assisted on two other goals during the 8-0 Kenyon run, which followed two goals from DePauw to open the game.

The Tigers tacked on two more goals in the second quarter to pull within 9-4, but that would be it for the DePauw offense, which got shutdown by the Kenyon defense for the final 33:12 of the contest.

O'Neil added three more goals in the third quarter, giving her a season-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Three other Owls, including Brophy, finished with five-point outputs. Brophy did so on four goals and an assist. Tatumn Eccleston logged a goal and four assists, while Ashley Quinn went with three goals and two assists.

Lily Mason scored twice for Kenyon as did Julia Losey, who also won 10 of Kenyon's 14 draw controls.

Kenyon's defense held DePauw to just 20 shots for the duration. It also forced 14 turnovers and five failed clears. At the back end, goalkeeper Nola Garand got the start and made five saves. Delaney Gallagher replaced Garand, finished off the final 25 minutes of play, and also made five saves.

On the other side of the field, the Owls offense closed out the game with 11 unanswered goals.
