Kenyon rallies to topple Tigers and advance

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Utilizing home-court advantage, the DePauw University Tigers took an early lead against No. 17-ranked Kenyon College in Saturday's semifinal round of the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament. The Owls, however, got things going in singles play and rallied for a 5-3 victory.

The win makes Kenyon 14-9 overall this season and pushes the Owls into the NCAC Championship match tomorrow against No. 14-ranked Denison University, which defeated Wabash College, 5-0, in Saturday's other semifinal match.

The Owls got a quick win at No. 2 doubles on Saturday from Thomas Kallarakal and Eric Zhang, who upended DePauw's team of Cole Metzger and Hudson Mosher by an 8-5 count. The Tigers then surprised the Owls with 8-7 tiebreaker wins at both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

Heading into singles play facing a 2-1 deficit, the Owls began their rally, which started with a 6-1, 6-3 win for Paulo Pocasangre Kreling over Metzger. That win, which came in the No. 5 match, knotted things up at 2-2 in team points.

Luis Andres Platas and Rishil Kondapaneni then jumped in with back-to-back wins that put Kenyon one point away from clinching. Platas knocked off Ryan McCook 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 match, while Kondapaneni chalked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 against Thomas Partridge.

DePauw bounced back with a win at No. 2 singles, but Zhang sealed the deal for the Owls by winning the No. 6 match 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 over Grayson Zylstra.
