Owls conclude season with losses to OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio -- In all but one inning, the Kenyon College Owls remained competitive in their final doubleheader of the 2023 softball season. Ohio Wesleyan University managed a seven-run inning in game one Saturday and used it to complete a sweep of Kenyon. The host Battling Bishops took game one 8-2 and then followed up with a 5-3 game-two victory.

The Owls were looking good through the first four innings of game one. Ohio Wesleyan scored once in the second inning, but in the top of the third Arianna Jalomo got on base by way of an Ohio Wesleyan error. Maeve McLaughlin then belted a home run over the left field fence, putting Kenyon ahead, 2-1. It was the first collegiate home run for McLaughlin, a first-year.

Meanwhile, sophomore pitcher Amanda Harris was cruising for Kenyon. She allowed just the one Battling Bishops run on four hits through four innings of work.

Things, however, began to unravel for the Owls in the bottom of the fifth. The Battling Bishops used two singles, as well as three hit batters, to score twice and chase Harris from the pitcher's circle. Sofia Zayas relieved Harris, but couldn't stop the bleeding. A Kenyon error allowed two more runs to score. That was followed by a three-run homer for Sophie Leohner, who completed a seven-run inning that gave the Battling Bishops an 8-2 lead.

In addition to McLaughlin's home run, the Owls got a game-one double from Persy Hort, as well as a single from Jesse Leener.

Kenyon's hit output tripled from three in game one to nine in game two. Hort and Nicole Archambeau each had two hits in the nightcap, while McLaughlin and Leener both added a hit to their daily total.

The Owls struck first in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Hort led things off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She came around to score on an RBI single from Leener, who later tapped the plate following a double smacked by Natalya Delsante.

That lead was short-lived, as the Battling Bishops responded with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. They got to Kenyon starting pitcher Allison McCutchen for a couple of hits, a couple of walks, and a sacrifice fly.

The 3-2 lead increased by one in the bottom of the fifth, after the Battling Bishops scored an unearned run off a Kenyon error. Kenyon, however, got the run right back in the sixth inning and pulled within 4-3 after an Archambeau sacrifice fly scored McLaughlin.

That would be as close as the Owls would get. Ohio Wesleyan tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning and closed out all scoring.

The losses ended Kenyon's season at 1-31 overall and 0-14 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. Ohio Wesleyan used the wins to improve to 14-18 overall and 9-5 in conference action.
