Kenyon women split two at Midwest Invite

MADISON, Wisc. -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team played two matches Friday, the first day of the two-day, eight-team Midwest Invitational. The No. 32-ranked Owls got off to a good start, posting an 8-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus College in the quarterfinal round, but were edged in the semifinals, 5-4, by No. 19-ranked Washington University in St. Louis.

The top of the Kenyon lineup set the tone throughout both matches. At the No. 1 spot, first-year Eleni Lazaridou won both her singles matches and paired with classmate Allaire Berl to win both their No. 1 doubles matches. Back in singles play, Berl, playing at No. 2, also went undefeated in her two matches.

At No. 2 doubles, the Owls registered another perfect 2-0 record from their pairing of first-year Shadia Amado Aguad and junior Eleni Dakos.

Against Gustavus Adolphus, the Owls swept the three doubles matches and dropped just one of the six singles matches. Against Washington, the Owls took two of the three doubles matches, but wound up being outscored 4-2 in singles play.

Amado Aguad, Catriona MacIntosh, and Lalasa Nagireddy all went 1-1 in singles play.

Back at the top of the lineup, both Lazaridou and Berl are 9-1 in their last ten singles matches. Overall this season, Lazaridou is 17-3, while Berl sports a 16-5 mark.

The loss in the semifinal round halted Kenyon's team win streak at seven matches. The Owls are now 13-4 overall and will play in the Invitational's third-place game tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Grinnell College.
