Kenyon tops Grinnell, finishes third at Midwest Invite

MADISON, Wisc. -- After splitting two matches Friday, the Kenyon College women's tennis team returned to Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Saturday morning for the third-place match in the two-day, eight-team Midwest Invitational. The Owls faced Grinnell College in that contest and coasted to an 8-1 victory.

The win not only gave the No. 32-ranked Owls a third-place finish in the Midwest bracket, but also improved the team's overall season record to 14-4. Grinnell dropped to 12-7 after the defeat.

The top part of Kenyon's lineup remained the same against the Pioneers, but there were some changes to the bottom half, as Catriona MacIntosh, Lalasa Nagireddy, and Natalie Connelly all moved up one spot in singles play. MacIntosh and Connelly responded with straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, but Nagireddy was unable to finish her match at No. 5, giving Grinnell its lone team point.

Connelly and MacIntosh also paired up in doubles play and chalked up an 8-0 win in the No. 3 match, giving the two a perfect 2-0 day.

The three Owls at the top of the lineup also recorded perfect 2-0 records Saturday. Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl held on for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and then went their separate ways in singles play, with Lazaridou winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 and Berl taking the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-4.

Additionally, Shadia Amado Aguad won her No. 3 singles match in three sets and previously joined Eleni Dakos for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Kenyon now looks ahead to a big conference match at Denison University on Wednesday. Denison, ranked at No. 29, is currently 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference and Kenyon is 4-0.
