Owls topple Big Red, gain share of NCAC crown

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- In a key match between two women's tennis teams that were undefeated in the conference, the No. 32-ranked Kenyon College Owls took to the road Wednesday evening and upended the No. 22-ranked Denison University Big Red by a final count of 6-3.

The result left Kenyon the lone undefeated team in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and moved the Owls to the top of the standings with a 5-0 mark. The Owls still have one NCAC match to play (Saturday at DePauw University), but their win over Denison secured at least a share of the NCAC regular-season championship. A win at DePauw gives Kenyon sole ownership of the regular-season championship.

The win also improved Kenyon's overall season record to 15-4. Denison, on the other hand, fell to 14-5 overall and 5-1 in NCAC play. The Big Red can claim a share of the NCAC regular-season championship if Kenyon is defeated by DePauw.

The Owls were ready from the start, taking two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Kenyon's first-year pairing of Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl raced ahead 6-1 and then put away Sydney Ciancola and Sarah Robertson, 8-5. At No. 2, junior Eleni Dakos and first-year Shadia Amado Aguad rallied from a 6-4 deficit to claim an 8-7 (7-5) victory against Monique Brual and Caroline Lopez.

When play flipped to singles, the Owls claimed victories in the first three matches to be completed and quickly clinched the team win. Lazaridou checked in first with a tidy 6-2, 6-0 win against Ciancola at No. 1 and, a few minutes later, Amado Aguad chalked up a convincing 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Peyton Oda in the No. 3 match.

Needing just one more match win, Kenyon got it from senior Catriona MacIntosh, who pieced together a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory against Kendall Schrader at No. 6. Not long after that, sophomore Lalasa Nagireddy tacked on another Kenyon point, taking the No. 5 match 6-4, 6-2 over Caroline Kittle.

Denison closed things out with two close singles wins, but it was too little, too late for the Big Red.
