Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Owls oust OWU from NCAC Tournament

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Tied 8-8 with Ohio Wesleyan University and playing a man-down to start the fourth quarter, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team scored four goals in a 10-minute span and forged ahead to record a 12-10 victory in Thursday's semifinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament.

The result not only advanced the Owls (15-1) to the NCAC Tournament final, but it also marked a program single-season record for wins and avenged the only loss that Kenyon suffered this season.

In that fourth quarter, Kenyon killed off a penalty when goalkeeper Adam Hall made a save on a shot from Will Siegenthaler. The Owls maintained possession, moved the ball upfield and burned off the rest of the penalty time. From there, they put the ball in the hands of Rollins Heath, who fired in the go-ahead goal with 13:33 on the clock.

Exactly one minute later, Rowan Goldin set up David Chintala, who scored a goal that put the Owls in front 10-8.

With a little more than five minutes remaining in the game, Carson Geier gave the Battling Bishops new life by scoring twice in a span of 36 seconds. That spurt tied the game back up at 10-10 with 4:59 to play.

Kenyon senior Jack Giuffre then gave Kenyon the lead for good, scooping up a ground ball on a failed Ohio Wesleyan clear and scoring his 32nd goal of the season.

The Battling Bishops drew an illegal procedure call after the goal and Kenyon wasted no time in taking advantage.Twenty-four seconds after the whistle, Chintala pumped in the man-up goal, utilizing an assist from Heath.

Ohio Wesleyan took three more shots over the final two minutes, but two sailed wide and the other was saved by Hall, who finished the game with 11 saves for Kenyon.

Back in the first quarter, it looked as if the Owls would run away with an easy win. Chase MacCartee scored twice, as did Giuffre, and Kenyon broke out of the gate with a 6-0 lead.

It wasn't until the 12:32 mark of the second quarter that the Battling Bishops scored their first goal. They went on to score three more times in the quarter, but trailed Kenyon 8-4 at the half.

In the third quarter, Ohio Wesleyan's Spencer Amacher scored his third and fourth goals of the game and led a charge in which the Battling Bishops outscored the Owls 4-0, knotting things up for the final quarter of play.

While Amacher led Ohio Wesleyan, Giuffre led Kenyon with a five-point game on three goals and two assists. Chintala and MacCartee both finished with three goals, and Heath checked out with a goal and two assists.

The NCAC Tourament final will be played Sunday and Kenyon's opponent will be the winner of tonight's other NCAC Tournament semifinal game between Denison University and Oberlin College. If Denison wins, the Big Red will host the Tournament final. If Oberlin wins, then Kenyon will host the Tournament final.
