Owls sweep Otterbein, move on in NCAA Tournament

PITTSBURGH, Pa.-- Competing in the first round of the 2023 NCAA DIII Women's Tennis Championships, the Kenyon College women's tennis team began its time in the NCAA Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Otterbein University.

The Owls' postseason opener was played on Carnegie Mellon University's campus, and Kenyon matched up against Otterbein indoors at Alpha Tennis and Fitness. Kenyon, the No. 32-ranked team in the nation, boosted its season record to 19-4 after the Owls' 13th win over the last 14 outings. Otterbein bows out of the Tournament after compiling a 15-7 record this season.

Kenyon's dominant doubles play helped the Owls take an early 3-0 lead in the dual. The No. 2 duo of Eleni Dakos and Shadia Amado Aguad was first to finish, cruising to an 8-1 win. Kenyon's No. 1 pairing of Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl followed suit with an 8-2 victory before seniors Catriona MacIntosh and Erika Pontillo secured the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win.

Needing to win just two singles matches to clinch the dual, the Owls went to work. The Cardinals competed hard in the top singles bouts, but the Owls secured sweeps in the Nos. 3 and 5 matches to seal the deal. Lalasa Nagireddy posted a flawless 6-0, 6-0 decision in the No. 5 match for Kenyon's fourth point before Amado Aguad closed the 5-0 win with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 margin of her own in the No. 3 match.

Kenyon advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they will take on No. 18-ranked New York University. The Owls have a quick turnaround as the contest will be played tomorrow, May 5, at 2 p.m. The winner of the second-round matchup moves on to face the winner of the duel between No. 14 Carnegie Mellon and Hope College, who won their first-round matchup 5-0.
