GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's soccer team overcame a tough matchup against Mount Aloysius College, claiming a 2-1 win on Mavec Field. Joaquin Sanchez-Korenfeld scored both Owls goals to extend a three-game scoring streak, while the win was Kenyon's fourth straight.
The two-goal game for Sanchez-Korenfeld is another example of his increased impact in his first season for the Owls. The sophomore's goals were his first this season, and they come after dishing out an assist two games ago and two assists in his last outing.
For Kenyon, Sanchez-Korenfeld's emergence has coincided with four consecutive victories. The Owls improved their record to 4-2, including a 4-1 mark at Mavec, by handing Mount Aloysius (3-1-2) its first loss.Â
The Mounties took three of the game's first four shots, but the Owls orchestrated some of the match's earliest threats. Alem Duratovic, Kenyon's leading scorer, narrowly missed in the 22nd minute after beating the defense and finding an opening deep in the right side of the MAC box. In the 30th minute, Sanchez-Korenfeld sent a shot right at the MAC keeper, who deflected the ball, and Matt Nguyen's ensuing look off of the rebound sailed just high.Â
Shortly thereafter, in the 31st minute, Sanchez-Korenfeld put Kenyon ahead 1-0. The sophomore corralled a pass from Ben Lantz at the top of the box, boxed out a defender a defender, and fired a shot that hit and trickled off the Mounties keeper into the net.
Refusing to go away, the Mounties nearly tied the match in the 53rd minute. Enter Jack Pedreschi, who leaped up and blocked a ball at the top of the net for a signature save. Unfortunately for Pedreschi and Kenyon, the Mounties managed to break through in the 68th minute. Juan Camacho found space on the left side of the field and drove deep into Owls territory before serving up a crossing assist to Gonzalo Terricabris, who knotted the game at 1-1.
Kenyon ratcheted up the pressure as both teams increased their physicality and intensity. The attack paid off as the Owls offense broke through again in the 85th minute. Despite Mount Aloysius calling for an offside call, Sanchez-Korenfeld fired a shot on goal and tapped in the rebound to reclaim Kenyon's lead.
Mount Aloysius would not get another chance to score, and the game's final minutes featured two yellow cards and two red cards handed to Mounties players. Overall, Kenyon was issued one card, a yellow, while MAC received five.
Kenyon outshot the Mounties 16-9, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. All four of Sanchez-Korenfeld's match-high four shots were on target, and Eamon Dujakovich provided strong pushes with three shots. Pedreschi secured five saves as the Kenyon defense conceded just its second goal over the four-game winning streak.
The Owls will look to make it five straight when they welcome Marietta College (2-4-1) to Mavec Field on Wednesday, September 20. The match is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
