Owls fall to unbeaten Battling Bishops

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Owls (4-4, 1-1 NCAC) faced a tough test on the road Tuesday night against the undefeated Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University (6-0, 1-0 NCAC). The Owls entered the contest coming off an overtime victory against Sweet Briar College, yet they were no match for OWU, who has won the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in back-to-back seasons.

The first half went back and forth, and neither team was able to land a goal. The Kenyon defense stayed strong, keeping the game competitive. Senior Lucy Scott made a highlight-reel defensive save when she knocked away a dangerous shot in the second quarter. The brightest spot of this game was the tremendous play of goalie Megan Lydon, who appeared to be everywhere, making some fantastic sliding saves.

Kenyon's offense was limited throughout the game, but the Owls began the second quarter with a penalty corner that resulted in a shot by junior Grace Lane. Lane took another shot off of a corner later in the second quarter, though these were only shots attempted by the Owls in the first half.

The dominant OWU offense took charge in the third quarter, as the ball was on Kenyon's side of the field for the majority of the period. The Battling Bishops racked up penalty corners, and Grace Ammon opened up the scoring late in the third quarter.

The Owls entered the fourth quarter trailing by only one goal, though the Battling Bishops soon began to pull away. Olivia Danley scored the second goal for OWU, who never looked back. The Battling Bishops tacked on two more goals, including another from Danley, to make the final score 4-0.

OWU managed 28 shots, 14 of which were shots on goal, drew 14 penalty corners, and only faced one shot on goal, which was saved. Kenyon took just four shots, drew six corners, and Lydon made 10 saves.

The Owls will look to bounce back this weekend as they have an important matchup against Denison University on Saturday, September 23. The NCAC contest is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. in Granville, Ohio.
