Owls add another win at Great Lakes Cross Over

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- For the second day in a row, the Kenyon College volleyball team collected a convincing victory in their first of two matches at the Great Lakes Cross Over. The Owls placated the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg (0-3) in straight sets, winning 25-19, 25-14, 25-15.

Kenyon set the tone from the jump, hitting .313  with 16 kills while holding the Bobcats to a -.037 clip and four kills in set one. The Owls showed off a different skill set in the second and third sets, dealing out eight aces in each frame to build a 16-4 advantage in the service game.

Overall, Kenyon outhit the Bobcats .278-.071 and racked up a 37-18 advantage in kills. Senior Lindsey Abramson amassed a match-high 11 kills on 18 attempts, and she hit .611 after not recording an error. Abramson's 1.5 blocks helped her tie Aura Barinas for the match lead with 12.5 points as Barinas notched eight kills, four aces, and half a block while adding six digs and three assists.

Maggie Wolf led the way with 14 assists and six aces while contributing eight digs. Hannah Schwemm dished out 12 assists, while Lauren Blakemore compiled 13 digs.

Unfortunately, the Owls could not carry their momentum into a contest against Capital University (2-2) later in the day. The Comets claimed a win in straight sets after victories of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-11.

Kenyon kept things close in the first set, but Capital hit a whopping .462 en route to a 15-7 edge in kills. Seven Comets service errors benefitted the Owls in set one, but the script flipped in set two. Kenyon compiled an 11-10 edge in kills, but the Comets' 9-4 advantage in the service game provided the margin for victory. In the deciding third set, Capital servers dished out 11 aces compared to Kenyon's two.

Becca Gwynne paced the Owls with 5.5 points and five kills, hitting .200. Wolf (11) and Schwemm (8) added more assists, while Blakemore again led Kenyon with seven digs.

After diving head first into the season with four games in under 24 hours, the Owls' next outing is of the one-game variety. Kenyon (2-2) is set to travel to Bluffton, Ohio, to take on Bluffton University (0-3) on Wednesday, September 6, at 7 p.m.
