Owls impressive run game outshined by Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College football team rushed for 355 yards and put together three long touchdown runs Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium. The Owls, however, couldn't get the passing game on track and dropped a 70-21 North Coast Athletic Conference decision to The College of Wooster Fighting Scots.

Kenyon ran the ball 47 times and averaged 7.6 yards per carry, but the air attack netted just 51 yards on seven completions. The Owls' final rushing total was the fifth-best single-game mark in program history and the best since the 1999 team racked up 361 rushing yards in a 49-7 win against Oberlin College.

The first big chunk of Saturday's rushing total occurred during the Owls' second possession of the game. On second-and-10 from the Kenyon 36-yard line, junior Drake Lewis ripped through the line and bolted 64 yards to pay dirt, tying the game at 7-7 early in the first quarter.

Before the quarter would end, three more touchdowns were scored. Wooster tallied the next two to move ahead 21-7, but Kenyon answered with another long run. This time it was sophomore Jordon Benjamin who blasted through the Fighting Scots defense on his way to a 73-yard touchdown run.

In the second quarter, Wooster (2-2, 1-1 NCAC) pulled away, scoring four times while keeping Kenyon scoreless. That resulted in a huge 49-14 halftime lead for the home team.

Kenyon (0-4, 0-2 NCAC) then chipped away at its deficit with another touchdown run, one that came on the team's first possession of the second half. A nine-play, 75-yard drive by the Owls was capped by a 23-yard touchdown run from quarterback Park Penrod. That, however, was it for the Kenyon offense and Wooster closed out the contest with three more touchdowns, including a 25-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter.

Overall, three players made up the entire Kenyon ground game. Lewis finished with 167 yards on 15 carries, Benjamin piled up 105 yards on 21 attempts and Penrod rounded out the trio with 83 yards on 11 carries.

The Owls finished with 406 yards of total offense, while the Fighting Scots amassed 627 yards with 308 on the ground and 319 in the air. Wooster also benefited from a plus-three mark in turnovers. Two of those Kenyon miscues resulted in touchdowns for the Fighting Scots.

Wooster quarterback Chaden Lee wound up going 18-for-30 with 315 passing yards and three touchdowns. His play was complemented by that of running backs Jarvis Mims Jr. and Shakir Perkins. Mims Jr. carried the ball 23 times and posted 132 yards and a pair of scores, while Perkins added 10 totes for 86 yards and two more scores.

Next up for the Owls is their Homecoming game. They entertained the Hiram College Terriers (0-4, 0-2 NCAC) on Saturday with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
