Owls start conference run by topping Tigers

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The Kenyon College men's soccer team took its first steps toward a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) title defense, as the Owls recorded a 3-1 victory over the DePauw University Tigers in the first league game of the season for both squads.

Kenyon, winners of the last seven NCAC regular-season crowns, improved to 7-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play with the win. The Saturday home loss for DePauw dropped the Tigers to 4-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 within NCAC play.

The Owls looked, once again, to junior Alem Duratovic to power the attack. He responded with the team's first goal and last goal of the game. That output gave Duratovic three goals in his last two games and four in his last four. Overall, he leads the Owls offense with eight goals and 17 points this season. Additionally, his two goals Saturday gave him 33 for his career. That mark ranks eighth best in program history.

Duratovic's first goal against DePauw found the net in the 26th minute. He was assisted by Alex Ramirez on the play. His second goal, scored in the 71st minute, was assisted by Charlie Penzone.

Back in the first half, roughly 13 minutes after Duratovic's first goal, the Owls tallied their second score of the game. Miko Warshaw fed Joey Martens on the play. The goal was Martens' second of the season and the assist was Warshaw's first.

DePauw avoided the shutout when Ethan Webster snuck a shot past Kenyon goalkeeper Jack Pedreschi in the 65th minute. Pedreschi ended up making two saves in the game, giving him 29 for the season.

Kenyon, which posted advantages of 10-6 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks, now turns its attention to its next opponent, conference rival Ohio Wesleyan University. That contest is slated for a 3:30 pm start at Mavec Field on Wednesday.
