No. 16-ranked Generals spoil Owls home opener

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Playing on The Field at Benson Bowl for the first time this season, the Kenyon College field hockey team took on the tall order of battling No. 16-ranked Washington and Lee University. The visiting Generals backed up that ranking by scoring two early goals en route to a 6-1 victory.

Washington and Lee (1-2) fired 10 first-quarter shots at the Kenyon cage and two of those found their mark. Margaret Cover rang up the first goal six minutes from the start and Zoe Dolfis tacked on the second about five minutes later.

Prior to either of those going in, the Generals had another prime opportunity, as Kate Ruffin was awarded a penalty stroke. She decided to go left side, but Kenyon goalkeeper, Megan Lydon, leaning the other way, flung her stick up with her right hand and knocked the ball away, out of midair.

Ruffin would later get her revenge, scoring the Generals' third goal in the second quarter and putting Kenyon in a 3-0 hole.

A little more than one minute into the third quarter, Kenyon's offense came through. From the right side, senior Hannah Paprotna fired over a crossing pass that was met by junior Ella Haskins. Awaiting the pass, Haskins lifted it into the cage for her third score of the season.

That, unfortunately, would be all the Kenyon offense could muster. The Owls were outshot by the Generals 28-2, but Lydon did her best to keep Kenyon in the game, making a season-high 13 saves.

Washington and Lee got a third-quarter goal from Betty Boatwright and then capped off the game with fourth-quarter goals from Sophia Cover and one more from Ruffin.

Kenyon (1-2) will take a quick breather and then get right back to it Sunday, as it hosts Ferrum College at noon.
