Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls ousted by sharpshooting Yeomen

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Kenyon College Owls men's basketball team traveled to northeast Ohio on Wednesday night for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup against the Oberlin College Yeomen.

Despite the chilly January weather, the Yeomen were red-hot from the field in the first half and the Owls could not keep up, falling 69-44.

Oberlin (9-6, 3-3 NCAC) shot 54 percent from the field in the first, including 75 percent from both three-point-land and the charity stripe, allowing the Yeomen to build a lead that Kenyon could not overcome.

The Owls (4-11, 2-4 NCAC), led by Gefen Bar-Cohen with 15 points, tallied a 26 percent mark from the field on the game while going 11 percent from three and 66 percent from the free throw line.

Kenyon's shooting woes began from the opening tip, going just 3-for-16 from the field to start the game and 2-of-5 from three. Conversely, Oberlin buried 60 percent of its field goals to open up a 16-9 lead midway through the first half. Connor Moss had six of Kenyon's first nine points, picking up right where he left off after a career-high outing against Wittenberg last weekend.

After a nearly four-minute scoring drought by both teams, Oberlin caught fire again, going on a 9-2 run as the first half reached its final two minutes, going 100 percent from the field as the Owls trailed 31-14.

In the half's final minutes, Nick Nelson re-entered the game and had a great steal leading to an easy layup to cut into the Oberlin lead. On the next possession, Bar-Cohen backed down his defender and hit a turnaround one-handed lay-in, but it wasn't enough to combat Oberlin's Dimitrije Radusinovic, who went a perfect 5-for-5 from three in the first half overall and hit three in the final two minutes to give the Yeomen a 40-20 lead after one.

After halftime, both teams were relatively slow to score, but Oberlin had noticeably more chances than Kenyon thanks to some staunch Yeomen defense, opening up a 9-2 run to start the second on 4-of-7 shooting from the field.

As the Owls began to battle back, Drew Valentino tried to will Kenyon back into position, scoring five straight points for the squad and capping off the run with a powerful and-one layup to bring the deficit to 49-27.

To close the game, Kenyon's defense stood tough and the offense had an uptick in production, but it was too little too late as the Owls ultimately fell 69-44.

Bar-Cohen led Kenyon with 15 points, while Moss and Valentino had eight and seven points respectively. Nelson, Dylan Fuerst, and Sam Lieberman each had four, and Peter Haas had two.

The loss is Kenyon's third in a row and drops the team's record to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in the NCAC. The Owls stay on the road on Saturday, January 13th to take on the Denison University Big Red at 1:00 pm for an afternoon rivalry showdown.
