Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Owls hang around, but Big Red take over late

GAMBIER, Ohio -- For three quarters, the Kenyon College women's basketball team gave Denison University a run for its money during Saturday's conference contest at Tomsich Arena. The visiting Big Red, however, put together a strong finish, capitalized on Kenyon turnovers and departed with a 77-53 win.

The final result, which was more lopsided than the game indicated, bumped up the Big Red's record to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) action. The loss dropped the Owls to 3-13 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC.

While Kenyon was battling Denison it was also battling a turnover problem. The Big Red defense pressed for most of the game, forcing 24 Kenyon miscues. Those turnovers also turned into 28 points, including 23 on fast breaks, for the Big Red.

From the start, Kenyon never backed down. A pair of Alyssa Gest three-point buckets early on gave the Owls leads of 5-2 and 8-6. Denison then knotted the game at 8-8 and again at 13-13 following a Maddie Goodman three-pointer. Over the final two minutes of the quarter, Goodman hit another three, as did teammate Abigail Westmeyer, who put the Big Red ahead 19-13.

In the second quarter, Kenyon closed within two, using back-to-back buckets from Claudia Cooke. Denison answered again, this time whipping up an 11-0 run to build a 30-17 advantage.

Gest and Cooke kept Kenyon alive, though, and brought their team back within five points. By the break, Gest had 14 points and Cooke had 10. The Big Red, however, got to halftime with a nine-point margin, 38-29.

Still attempting to fight off Denison's ever-present press, the Owls outscored the Big Red 20-19 in the third quarter and inched a bit closer as they headed toward the final 10 minutes of play. In that third quarter, Cooke scored nine of her game-high 23 points. Mikayla Rudolph scored four, as did Melana Pomerants.

The eight-point difference going into the fourth quarter would be as close as Kenyon would get. Denison, again capitalizing off turnovers, closed out the game on an 18-2 tear over the final eight minutes of play.

In addition to her 23 points, Cooke also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Owls. Gest finished with 16 points and Rudolph scored nine. Anissa Hardy managed just one point, but helped on the glass, corralling another eight rebounds for Kenyon.

Denison had nine different players score points with four of them in double digits. Abby Cooch led the way with 17 and Ada Taute had 16. Westmeyer finished with 13 and Goodman closed things out with a dozen.
