GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The Kenyon College and DePauw University men's basketball teams faced off for the second time this season on Saturday. After the Owls defended their home court and sent DePauw packing with a last-second game-winning shot in their first meeting, the Tigers took care of business at home and handed Kenyon a 76-58 loss to split the season series.
Kenyon took an early 3-2 edge after Murathan Kocaman knocked down a three-pointer, but the Tigers responded with a trifecta on the other end and took back a lead they would not relinquish. The Owls fell to 4-14 overall and 2-7 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contests, while DePauw improved to 11-7 overall and 6-3 in the NCAC.
Kocaman's quick basket set the tone for what was a good game from the first-year. Kenyon's starting center was dialed in from downtown, shooting 3-6 from behind the arc and setting season highs for both makes and attempts. He finished with 11 points and grabbed six rebounds while also dishing out an assist.
The Owls kept it close for the first half of the first frame and trailed by just one, 14-13, after a basket from Kenyon's leading scorer, Gefen Bar-Cohen. However, the Tigers pulled away with a 22-12 run to close the half despite six points from Kocaman over the stretch.
Dylan Fuerst scored the first points of the second stanza, but DePauw rattled off eight straight points to extend their lead to 44-27. The teams traded points over the next few minutes, but another Tigers run, this time a 9-0 spurt, gave the home team its largest lead. The Owls chipped away at the 26-point deficit, but DePauw closed out the win to enact its revenge on Kenyon.
The Tigers benefitted from a more accurate performance from three-point territory and a higher quantity of chances at the free-throw line. Additionally, Kenyon committed eight more turnovers (11-3), which turned into a 17-5 margin in points off turnovers and an 8-0 edge in fastbreak points for DePauw.
Bar-Cohen paced Kenyon with 12 points, while fellow junior Connor Moss also reached double figures with 10. Charlie Heywood, a first-year, had a big game off the bench as the big man scored seven points and secured seven boards. His points matched a season-high, and his rebounding total was a game-high.
Kenyon heads into its season's final month, looking to return to its winning ways. The Owls have a week off before hosting Hiram College on Saturday, January 27. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at Tomsich Arena.
