Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tigers prove too much for Owls on the road

GREENCASTLE, Ind.— Scoring was hard to come by tonight as the Kenyon College Owls women's basketball team traveled to take on North Coast Athletic Conference foe DePauw University Tigers from Neal Court in Greencastle, Indiana on Wednesday.

Mikayla Rudolph was the solo leader for the Owls' offensive effort for the first time this season, posting 10 points in a game-high 33 minutes as DePauw downed Kenyon 79-29.

Kenyon's (3-16, 1-7 NCAC) offense struggled from the jump against the stingy Tiger defense, which ranks second in the conference in total defense, third in turnover margin, and fourth in steals.

In the first half, DePauw (14-5, 7-1 NCAC) held Kenyon to 15 points on 20 percent shooting, and the squad had a hard time moving the ball, as Rudolph, Claudia Cooke, and Anissa Hardy, the three points leaders for the team this season, were the only scorers for the Owls in the first half, trailing 32-15 after 20 minutes.

Coming out of halftime, Kenyon had its best offensive stretch of the night, shooting 60 percent from the field, 50 percent from three, and 66 percent from the charity stripe as Rudolph paced the team with five third-quarter points. Alyssa Gest added a deep three-pointer assisted by Cooke, while she and Hardy chipped in three points combined.

However, DePauw's high-powered offense, currently ranked third in the conference in total points, never let the Owls have much breathing room. The Tigers would score 47 points, nearly 60 percent of its total, in the second half, and the Owls could not keep up, ultimately falling 79-29.

For the game, DePauw shot 53 percent from the field and had 22 assists. The top-ranked Tiger defense caused 27 turnovers from Kenyon leading to 38 points.

Rudolph led the Owls with ten points and a game-high 33 minutes. Cooke came in next on the state sheet with eight points and led the team in rebounds (7) and assists (2). Hardy turned in a five-point night while adding a steal and a team-high four defensive rebounds on the other end. Gest added three points, Megan Lieb had two on two made free throws, and Melana Pomerants had one.

The loss drops Kenyon's record to 3-16 overall and 1-7 in the NCAC. The Owls return to Gambier for a Saturday afternoon showdown against the Wittenberg University Tigers at 1:00 PM, where the team will honor Morgan's Message for mental health awareness.
