Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cooke’s double-double sends Owls past Scots

GAMBIER, Ohio – In the team's first game of the new year, the Kenyon College Owls women's basketball team was firing on all cylinders Wednesday night as the squad faced off against The College of Wooster Fighting Scots in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup.

Claudia Cooke headed up the winning effort for the Owls, recording a 17-point, 16-rebound double-double to give Kenyon its third win of the season 63-44.

The Owls (3-10, 1-1 NCAC) as a team also recorded single-game season-highs in field goals made (23), assists (13), field-goal percentage (46.9 percent) and three-point percentage (45.5 percent) in the team's first NCAC win.

In the game's opening quarter, however, both teams started relatively slow, each scoring the team's lowest point totals of the night. Nevertheless, Kenyon spread the ball well throughout the period, seeing five different Owls get on the score sheet, with Cooke and Alyssa Gest leading the way with three points each to give the home team a 12-7 advantage.

The Kenyon offense, which has been kept relatively quiet during the team's last six games, exploded to a 15-point lead late in the second off of a 14-4 run as Anissa Hardy dropped four points, while Gest and Megan Lieb each had three to put the Owls up 26-11 with three minutes to play in the quarter. This lead would carry into the half, as Kenyon found itself up 35-20 on the Scots (4-7, 0-1 NCAC) through two.

After halftime, Kenyon continued to control the lead, partly thanks to the team's relentless defense. Coming into the game, the Fighting Scots averaged 37.4 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from three on the season, but the Owls held the conference foe to 31 percent from the field and just 14.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Kenyon also added six blocks on the day, as Cooke, Hardy, and Mikayla Rudolph each had two, and five steals led by Gest with two. The Owls also had an impressive day on the glass, out-boarding the Scots 42-27.

On the offensive side of the ball, Rudolph, Gest, and Cooke all reached double figures in the second half, a feat that's happened just twice before this season. Kenyon found a majority of its success on the day in the paint, controlling that battle 34-26 while adding a season-record-setting night from the field.

In the end, Cooke led all scorers with 17 points and hauled in a game-high 16 rebounds. Gest finished with 13 while leading the game with six assists, and Rudolph added 12 and co-led the team in blocks. Bela Krslovic chipped in six points, Hardy and Grace Murphy each had five, Lieb had three, and Raine Hammel added two on a night where eight of the nine active Owls found the stat sheet.

The win moves the Owls to 3-10 for the season and 1-1 in the NCAC. Kenyon returns to action on Saturday, January 6th for a 2 PM matchup against the Wittenberg University Tigers for the team's third NCAC game of the 2023-2024 campaign.
