Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Wallace nets last-second goal to top Sabres, stop skid

FOND DU LAC, Wisc. – After a tough three-game stretch in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play led to three losses, the Kenyon College field hockey team traveled to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin for a weekend slate of two non-conference games, the first on Friday afternoon against Marian University.

The Owls battled all game and despite playing from behind for most of the contest, the team rallied for two straight goals in the second half, as sophomore midfielder Maggie Wallace's game-winning goal with less than 30 seconds remaining got the team back in the win column 2-1.

Marian (5-7, 1-1 CFHC) came out strong out of the gate and looked more ready to play through one half, outshooting Kenyon 8-to-6 in the first two quarters and holding a 9-to-3 advantage on penalty corners.

Halfway through the second quarter, the Sabres offense got on the board, as a loose ball in front of the Owls' net led to the home team taking a 1-0 advantage, a lead which would hold through halftime.

After the break, Kenyon's (7-4, 3-3 NCAC) offense ratcheted up a notch, applying more pressure and pushing the ball downfield. Late in the third, the Owls maintained a strong presence in the offensive zone, registering four shots and three on goal while the Sabres had none. With five minutes remaining in the frame, Grace Lane drove to the cage and found Maren Lawrence who beat the goalkeeper and tied the game at one.

In the fourth, it was the Sabres' turn to tilt the field. The home team had eight shots in the quarter and five corners, and was threatening to break the tie for nearly all 15 minutes. Megan Lydon was a big part of keeping Marian off the scoreboard in the fourth, making three out of her four saves for the game in the final period.

Despite the lack of offensive chances down the stretch, the Owls had the ball with under a minute on the clock. The team drew a penalty corner with 27 seconds to play, as Wallace inserted the ball. She ripped a pass to Lane, who danced through a few defenders and fired a pass to Wallace on the back door, who tapped in the loose ball for the Kenyon win.

The game-winning goal was the first of Wallace's career, who typically plays on the defensive side of the ball. Lane's two assists on the day now put her second on the team (3) while maintaining her first overall status in points (19). Lawrence netted her seventh goal of the season, the second most on the team.

Kenyon's record improves to 7-4 overall with the win. The Owls will have a short turnaround for the second leg of their Wisconsin non-conference road trip, as the team will take on Concordia University Wisconsin (1-9, 0-2 CFHC) tomorrow at 10 am EST.
