Owls wrap up Wisconsin trip with a split

MEQUON, Wis. -- After dropping Marian University, 2-1, Friday, the Kenyon College field hockey team tried to pull off a clean sweep Saturday, the final day of its brief two-game slate in the Badger State. Concordia University, however, upset those plans with two first-half goals en route to a 2-1 win over the visiting Owls.

The contest marked the second time these two teams squared off this season. Back on September 7, the Falcons descended on Gambier, but were sent away with Kenyon's 2-1 overtime victory.

More comfortable on their home turf, the Falcons jumped out to an early lead Saturday and never looked back. Late in the first quarter of play, Concordia recorded the game's first goal. The tally followed a penalty-corner play in which one Falcons' shot was stopped by Kenyon defender Darcy Miller, the next shot was saved by goalkeeper Megan Lydon, and the third shot, which came off the stick of Katie Quirke, crossed the goal line.

In the second quarter, Concordia doubled its advantage. Again, the goal came off a string of shots. Lydon saved the first from the Falcons, but Paige Armijo was in the right spot to give Concordia a 2-0 lead with about five minutes left in the half.

Despite out-shooting the Falcons, 14-10, in the half, the Owls had nothing to show for it. Concordia goalkeeper Parks Cawthray made 10 saves to keep Kenyon off the scoreboard.

It wasn't until the game's 44th minute that the Kenyon offense finally broke through. Using an assist from Kiersten Hoffmann, sophomore Maren Lawrence fired her shot past Cawthray. The goal was Lawrence's eighth of the season, tying her with Grace Lane for the team lead. The assist was Hoffmann's second of the season.

That would be all for the Owls, as each team was held to just one fourth-quarter shot. The Concordia shot was saved by Lydon and, less than a minute later, a Kenyon shot from Ella Haskins was saved by Cawthray, who finished the game with 15 saves, compared to eight for Lydon.

The Owls ended up out-shooting the Falcons, 20-13, but the loss dropped the team's record to 7-5. The win boosted Concordia's overall mark to 2-9.
