Owls push past Presidents in return to conference play

WASHINGTON, Pa. – After splitting a two-game non-conference slate in Wisconsin, the Kenyon College field hockey team traveled to Washington and Jefferson College on Wednesday night for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tilt.

The Owls took the lead early on and never let it go, as Maren Lawrence scored twice and Grace Lane scored three time in a 7-0 rout.

Kenyon (8-5, 4-3 NCAC) got things started just 1:24 into the game, when Lawrence got the Owls on the board with an assist by Justine Cole

Just before the end of the quarter, the Owls expanded the lead to two, as Lane scored her first goal of the day, assisted by Lawrence at 13:36. Lane built the lead to three less than a minute into the second quarter to improve her season-long total to 10 goals, joining Lawrence for the most on the team.

Four minutes later, Lane scored again on an assist from Sarah Molloy, while Casey Master put Kenyon up 5-0 just before the half.

In the second half, the Owls continued to push on offense while holding down the Presidents on the other end of the field. Kiersten Hoffmann scored the team's sixth goal near the end of the third, assisted by Molloy, and Lawrence capped off the team's scoring early in the fourth, with an assist from Abby Golub, to finish the shutout win.

For the game, Kenyon outshot Washington and Jefferson (3-9, 3-5 NCAC) 16-to-6 and held a 7-to-6 advantage in penalty corners. The Owls set season highs in goals (7) and points (19) in the impressive return to conference play.

Defensively, the team recorded its fourth shutout of the season behind a three-save night from goalkeeper Megan Lydon

With the win, Kenyon's record improved to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference. The Owls will have another road conference test on Sunday in Springfield, Ohio, where they will take on the Wittenberg University Tigers at 1:00 p.m.
