Owls take down Terriers, run streak to three

HIRAM, Ohio -- Quarterback Park Penrod put together a massive game Saturday and led the Kenyon College Owls football team to a 27-7 win at Hiram College. The senior threw for 247 yards and a touchdown and stacked three rushing touchdowns on top of that.

The win for the Owls was their third in a row and pushed their record to 4-2 overall, including a 3-1 record within North Coast Athletic Conference action. The win also marked, for the first time since 2013, that Kenyon won three straight, won at least four games in a season, and started a season with a 4-2 record through its first six games.

The conference contest opened with a bang as the two teams combined for 21 points in the first quarter. After the Terriers went three-and-out with their first possession, Kenyon wasted no time in striking first, as Penrod connected with receiver Charlie Taylor on a 60-yard pass play that set the Owls up on the Hiram two-yard line. One play later, Penrod scrambled into pay dirt.

Penrod's next pass didn't work out so well. Starting a Kenyon drive on the 23-yard line, he was picked off by Malakai Nation, who took it the other way for Hiram, tying the game at 7-7.

Before the first quarter came to a close, Kenyon forced a Hiram miscue. Punting from their own 16-yard line, the Terriers could not contain the Owls, who broke through the line and blocked the punt, setting up the offense for another Penrod rushing touchdown, one that gave Kenyon a 14-7 advantage.

Kenyon had just two possessions in the second quarter. The first ended with a fumble and the second ended on a missed field goal attempt in the quarter's final seconds.

In the third frame, Kenyon put together an impressive, sustained drive that bumped its lead to 20-6. Penrod completed five of seven passes for 43 yards during the drive and the big play came from junior running back Julius Thompson, who broke free for 38 yards. A few plays later, Penrod scored his third rushing touchdown, this one from 11 yards out.

The Owls iced the game in the fourth quarter, after Penrod connected with receiver Luca Rumberg on a slant over the middle that went into the books as a 20-yard touchdown.

Penrod played a role in all four Kenyon touchdowns. He was 17-of-29 through the air and distributed his passes nicely. Rumberg, Charlie Taylor, Dylan Carlquist and Brendan Comerford all had three catches or more. Taylor led the group with 74 receiving yards. Comerford had 70 and Rumberg chalked up 69.

On the ground, Thompson just missed the century mark for the Owls. He carried the ball 16 times and wound up with a career-high 92 yards.

Not to be overlooked, the Kenyon defense played a terrific game, as well. For the second straight game, it did not yield a point. It allowed just 12 first downs and 206 yards of total offense to Hiram. It also forced four Terrier turnovers.

Leading the Owl defense was Dominic Simpson, who had 10 tackles and an interception. Jared Hancock forced a fumble and had nine tackles. Andrew Cooney had eight tackles, while Colin Tracey Jr. and Jackson Belyn accounted for the other two Kenyon interceptions. Tanner Smith, who had five tackles, recovered the Hiram fumble forced by Hancock.
