Kenyon struggles to get on track at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Playing a pair of matches in the Midwest Invitational, hosted by Calvin University, the Kenyon College volleyball team struggled to find a groove Saturday and wound up on the wrong side of 3-0 final scores to Mount Saint Joseph University and Carroll University.

In a morning match against Mount Saint Joseph (7-10), the Owls were defeated 25-12, 25-15, 25-19. In the afternoon match against Carroll (18-9), the Owls fell by a score of 25-12, 25-12, 26-24. Those results dropped Kenyon's overall season record to 7-15.

Mount Saint Joseph never really gave Kenyon a chance to get off the ground. The Lions opened the first set with a 9-2 lead and the second set with a 9-3 lead. Kenyon first-year Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese had three kills on six swings in that first set, but the Owls never got closer than four the rest of the way. In the second set, Kenyon had just five kills, as a team, but 21 digs, including six from Aura Barinas, kept them in the hunt.

The third set unfolded a bit differently. Kenyon kept pace with the Lions early on. Two Mount Saint Joseph errors and an ace from Olivia Gumz, got the Owls within one. The Lions scored the next four points and the two teams traded surges for the rest of the set, with Mount Saint Joseph hanging on for the win.

Barinas ended up leading Kenyon in both kills (9) and digs (11). Rumpca-Veronese  finished with six kills and four blocks, while Hannah Schwemm charted a team-high 14 assists to go along with nine digs.

The match with Carroll was similar, although Kenyon notched the first three points of the first set. After that, it was all Pioneers, who rattled off 14 straight to take control. Rumpca-Veronese led Kenyon with three kills in that set.

In the second set, Carroll opened with six straight points, but the Owls had an answer. An Arianna Flota ace pulled Kenyon within two points and, a little bit later, the combination of a Gumz ace and a Barinas kill got Kenyon within one, at 10-9. The Kenyon momentum fizzled there, however, and the Pioneers scored six of the next eight points and then closed out the set on a 9-0 run.

To its credit, Kenyon did not fold. The Owls put up a fight in the third set, building an early 6-4 edge. Down the stretch, a 5-0 run from Carroll put the Pioneers up 19-12, but Kenyon kept clawing back. A pair of kills from Sophia Menke sparked a Kenyon 5-0 run that put the Owls right back in it.

Carroll later got to match point at 24-19, but kills from Barinas and Gumz drew the Owls even at 24-24. The Pioneers then came right back with two kills of their own to finish things off.

Gumz and Barinas both racked up a total of five kills against Carroll. Schwemm dished up another 13 assists and Rumpca-Veronese found a way to lead the team with seven digs.

Kenyon now heads back to conference play, with its next match slated for Tuesday evening at Ohio Wesleyan University.
