Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Owls offense can’t break through against Terriers

HIRAM, Ohio – After two consecutive home games resulting in a draw and a loss, the Kenyon College women's soccer team hit the road Saturday afternoon for a North Coast Athletics Conference (NCAC) tilt with Hiram College.

Despite outshooting their opponent 30-9 overall and 11-5 on goal, both season highs, the Owls just could not find the back of the net for the game, eventually falling 2-0 to the Terriers.

Each team had chances early, as Hiram (3-11, 1-3 NCAC) registered the game's first shot on goal just five minutes in. Kenyon responded two minutes later, as Jamie Murphy nearly found twine but two saves by each goaltender kept the score 0-0.

The Terriers responded with two goals within five minutes of each other shortly after that, tallies which proved to be the only scoring in the contest. In the 12th minute after an Owls goal kick, the home team came right back down the field and buried a low shot to the right corner to open the scoring.

Hiram's next shot also found the back of the net, after two corner kicks pinned Kenyon (1-9-1, 0-4-1 NCAC) deep in their defensive zone. The second corner bounced through the back line and the Terriers headed the cross straight through.

After the two early goals, the Owls offense turned up the pressure, registering the final six shots to close the first half, with a ball by Claire Pruner nearly cutting the lead in half in the 41st minute. Nevertheless, the home team held the 2-0 lead through the break.

In the second half, Kenyon continued its relentless offensive attack, firing eleven straight shots to start the second frame but to no avail. Rips from Pruner, Margot Kuller, Holly Byun, and Anna Taggart all found the cage, but were all stifled by Hiram goalkeeper Emma Deffenbaugh.

Emily Copeland had a great chance in the 84th minute to try and get on the board, but that too would be turned away, marking the Owls' last chance of the game to lock in the 2-0 defeat.

In addition to the lopsided shot totals, Kenyon had a 9-5 corner advantage, another season high total for the squad. Copeland led the team with 10 shots, while Pruner paced the pack with three shots on goal, followed by Kuller with two.

On the defensive side of the ball, Ariel Kite made three saves in net, while Deffenbaugh made eleven for Hiram.

Kenyon's record falls to 1-9-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference with the loss. The Owls return to Gambier for a two-game conference home stand, the first kicking off on Tuesday, October 22 at 3:30 pm against Ohio Wesleyan University.
