Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Owls strike Tigers with season-high goal total

GAMBIER, Ohio -- A few hours after moving up to No. 15 in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III poll, the Kenyon College men's soccer team backed it up on the field Wednesday evening by blitzing conference foe Wittenberg University, 5-0.

The five goals marked a season-high for the Kenyon offense, which held a previous season-high of four goals in a home win against Anderson University. On the flip side, the Kenyon defense posted its sixth shutout of the season.

Throughout the game, five different players accounted for the Kenyon goals and three tacked on assists. The floodgates opened in the game's 18th minute when Gerardo Martinez buried a free kick that was set up just outside the Wittenberg box. His shot deflected off the Wittenberg wall of defenders and past the outstretched arm of Tigers' goalkeeper Andrew Cleveland. The goal was Martinez's third of the campaign.

A little more than 11 minutes later, Matt Nguyen scored off another deflection. Following a Kenyon corner kick, the ball eventually found the feet of Martinez again. He unleashed a shot from the top of the box, but it was thwarted by a defender. The rebound bounced right to Nguyen, who fired home his first goal of the season.

Before the teams made it to the halftime break, the Owls whipped up two more tallies with Hayato Ishii involved in both. In the game's 36th minute, Ishii attempted a header off a Kenyon corner. While the header didn't go the way he wanted, the ball did end up right in front of teammate Moustapha Gassama, who booted in his first goal of the season.

About eight minutes later, with just 1:23 left on the first-half clock, Victor Bravo III chipped a pass forward to Ishii, who collected it and beat Cleveland. That, too, was Ishii's first goal of the season.

The four-goal Kenyon advantage gave Head Coach Travis Wall the opportunity to look to other options on his bench during second-half play. John O'Sullivan and Vukasin Tomic answered that call, scoring the final goal of the game with about seven minutes left on the clock. A longer header from O'Sullivan took one big ounce in front of the Wittenberg net. Tomic got to it before the goalkeeper and headed it home for, yet another, individual first goal of the season.

Kenyon ended up out-shooting Wittenberg 22-4 and built an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Kenyon starting goalkeeper Jack Pedreschi played about 60 percent of the game and made one save. Owen Boukalik went the rest of the way and made one save, as well.

With two games left in the regular season, the Owls now sport a 10-2-3 overall record, which includes a 4-2-0 conference mark. The loss dropped Wittenberg to 3-6-2 overall and 1-3-0 in conference play.
