Wabash defense overpowers Kenyon

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- The Kenyon College Owls football team had trouble getting its offense to take flight Saturday at Little Giant Stadium, where host Wabash College deployed a defense that suffocated the Owls during a 38-0 conference contest.

Wabash, owner of a 6-1 overall record and 5-0 mark in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC), held the Kenyon offense to 10 first downs and 91 yards of offense. The Owls, now 4-4 overall and 3-3 in NCAC action, were just 2-of-17 in third-down conversion attempts.

Kenyon's main source of offense was quarterback Park Penrod, who was 12-of-25 for 80 yards. The Little Giants hassled him all day, sacking him 10 times and picking off one of his passes.

Brendan Comerford and Nolan Dirks led Kenyon in the receiving and rushing departments, respectively. Comerford caught six of Penrod's passes and turned them into 43 yards. Dirks carried the ball 15 times and gained 23 yards.

The Owls were unable to get the ball into the red zone Saturday, but they came close three different times. On their first possession of the game, the Owls moved the ball to the Wabash 29-yard line, but a 46-yard field goal attempt from Tyler Bell was blocked and returned 64 yards for a Little Giants touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Just before the half, Kenyon worked its way to the Wabash 26-yard line. The Owls, again, came away with nothing, as a Bell 43-yard field goal attempt missed the mark. Kenyon, on its last possession of the game, used a poor punt from Wabash to get to the 26-yard line again. The Owls, however, had time for just one play before the final horn sounded.

After the blocked field goal return, Wabash running back Xavier Tyler tacked on a first-quarter 20-yard touchdown run to give the Little Giants a 14-0 advantage. In the second quarter, T.J. Alexander broke off an eight-yard scoring scamper, pushing the Wabash lead to 21-0 before the half.

In the third quarter, the Little Giants broke open the game, scoring 17 points. That surge included an 11-yard scoring strike from quarterback Brand Campbell to receiver Connor Thompson, a 23-yard touchdown run from Cole Dickerson, and an 18-yard field goal from Brody Rucker.

In all, Wabash had 83 rushing yards and 199 passing yards.

Although the result was lopsided, the Kenyon defense continued to play well. Wabash's 282 yards of total offense was its lowest output of the season. Dominic Simpson led the Kenyon defense with 11 tackles, while Andy Melian added ten stops, including a sack.

The road ahead doesn't get much easier for the Owls. They return home to host the undefeated Tigers of DePauw University (7-0, 5-0 NCAC) on Saturday, November 2.
