RICHMOND, Ind. - The Kenyon College field hockey team concluded its 2024 campaign on a high note, securing a decisive 4-1 victory at Earlham College on Saturday afternoon. The Owls (10-6 overall, 6-4 NCAC) displayed depth and resilience in the season finale.
Despite a strong start from the Earlham offense, which earned four early penalty corner opportunities, Kenyon's back line stood firm. The defensive unit of
Justine Cole,
Darcy Miller,
Liz Cramer, and
Sarah Molloy effectively neutralized each of Earlham's set pieces, keeping the host at bay through the opening quarter.
The Quakers did, however, break through in the 22nd minute, when Alex Ball found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Kenyon's response was swift. Just three minutes later, sophomore
Abby Golub leveled the score, converting a well-executed corner that included an assist from Golub's classmate,Â
Casey Master. For Golub, it marked her first goal of the season and the second of her career.
In the second half, the Owls made the right adjustments and took control, with three different players finding the back of the net. Senior
Kiersten Hoffmann broke the deadlock in the 34th minute with her season's fourth goal.
Grace Lane, another senior, extended Kenyon's run with her team-leading 14th goal of the season, finishing off another assist by Master, the first multi-assist game of the sophomore's career. Then, in the fourth quarter, Master put the finishing touches on the Kenyon victory, scoring her fifth goal of the season in the 49th minute to secure the 4-1 result.
Lane wrapped up her season with 32 points on 14 goals and four assists. Those numbers placed her in some lofty spots in the Kenyon record book, as she closed out collegiate play ranked fifth all-time in program history with 84 career points and sixth all-time with 36 career goals.
The statistics reflected Kenyon's control of the match, as the Owls out-shot the Quakers, 12-3. The corner count stayed competitive at 5-4 in Kenyon's favor, though the Owls proved more efficient in converting their set-piece opportunities.
The victory caps off a successful season for the Owls, who finished with a double-digit win total for the fifth consecutive season.
