Owls put up a fight in finale with Tigers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The second-place DePauw University Tigers scored a 3-0 win at Tomsich Arena on Saturday afternoon, but the host Kenyon College Owls, fighting for a possible postseason spot did not make it easy. The Owls pushed the Tigers in each set, before falling by a 26-24, 25-16, 25-21 final.

Although Kenyon played well, the loss, combined with Oberlin College's win over The College of Wooster, took the Owls out of postseason contention and finalized the team's records at 7-20 overall and 1-6 within North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.

From the start, Kenyon was focused, taking an early 6-3 lead in the first set. The Tigers eventually moved ahead 14-11, but the Owls went on a 7-1 run to take an 18-15 edge. During the run, the Owls got kills from four different players, including two each from Olivia Gumz and Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese.

The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way, with neither leading by more than two points. Kenyon jumped ahead 24-23 on a kill from Aura Barinas, but DePauw tallied the last three points to steal the set.

The Tigers kept control in the second set, starting out with a 6-1 lead and building it to 12-5. The Owls regrouped and rattled off five straight points using another kill from Barinas, as well as a pair of aces from Lauren Blakemore. The Owls got within two points on three more occasions, but again, the Tigers finished strong, scoring nine of the set's last 11 points to move one step closer to the victory.

The third set was similar to the first, as Kenyon jumped out to an early advantage and DePauw clawed back. Four straight from the Tigers knotted things up at 12-12. DePauw then added three more in a row to move ahead 17-15, but Kenyon regained the lead, at 20-19, following a Barinas kill and a Hannah Schwemm ace. From there, the Tigers found a way to close things out, once again, scoring five straight to set up the win.

Barinas and Gumz tied for the team lead with nine kills apiece. Schwemm piled up 25 assists and seven digs, while Blakemore led the team with 15 digs and a trio of aces. Rumpca-Veronese ended up with six kills and four blocks.

On the other side of the net, DePauw was led by Olivia Karwin who put down a match-high 11 kills, without an error, on 27 swings. Five others had five or more kills for the Tigers, who finished with a total of 43 kills, compared to Kenyon's 33.

With the win, DePauw moved its records to 16-9 overall and 5-2 in NCAC action. The Tigers ended up in a three-way tie for second-place in the conference standings and will be one of six teams to move on to play in next week's NCAC Tournament.
