Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Kenyon starts second hot, but Heidelberg holds on

TIFFIN, Ohio – After a relatively slow opening half, the Kenyon College men's basketball team found itself in a slugfest in the final 20 minutes against Heidelberg University on Wednesday night on the road. The Owls offense looked unstoppable in the first minutes of the second, but the Student Princes answered with a big run and efficient shot making down the stretch to take the game 80-59.

Both teams shot very well from the field in the second, as the Student Princes went 72.7 percent and the Owls answered with a 54.2 percent mark. Gefen Bar-Cohen led the Kenyon (0-4) offense through a 24-to-21 battle in the opening minutes of the second in favor of the Owls. The senior ripped off eleven points capped off by a monstrous and-one with 8:25 to play as the team went 11-of-18 from the field. Charlie Heywood and Jackson Maloney chipped in four and three points respectively to set the score to 47-48.

Heidelberg (3-2) was able to withstand one of Kenyon's best stretches of the year and fire back with a great run of their own to put the game well out of reach, surging to a 27-4 run in under seven minutes of game time. Center Eric Panning led the Student Princes on offense with 33 points, and the Owls simply had no answer in crunch time.

The opening half was close the whole way, as both teams put up comparatively mediocre offensive and defensive numbers compared to the second frame. The Owls led the way with a 30.8 percent mark from the field and 28.6 percent from downtown. The Student Princes were not far behind with a 29 percent field goal number and 21.4 percent from three, but were able to build a 22-15 lead midway through the first.

Heidelberg never surrendered that lead through halftime, despite trailing in shooting percentages, rebounding (22-to-19), free throw percentage (62.5 to 50), and bench points (9-to-8). First-year Marius Mazeika led the Kenyon attack through the first 20 minutes, scoring seven points, but the Owls trailed 23-27.

Bar-Cohen finished with a team high 15 points and added one block and a steal. Maloney added eleven with three triples at a 60 percent clip. Mazeika finished with nine points and ten rebounds after an early exit due to a clear path flagrant foul, and Nick Valentino scored eight.

Kenyon's record falls to 0-4 on the season. The Owls will return to Gambier and take on Muskingum University on Saturday, November 23 at 2:00 pm from Tomsich Arena.
