Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls bested by Beavers in another close battle

BLUFFTON, Ohio – After picking up the team's first win of the season last Saturday in a 61-60 nail-biter against Muskingum, the Kenyon College men's basketball team found itself in another close contest on Tuesday night on the road against Bluffton.

Although the Owls gained an early nine-point lead in the first half, the Beavers were able to rally back and ice the game in the final two minutes 83-74.

First year sharpshooter Jackson Maloney and senior forward Gefen Bar-Cohen each got going early to help build a first-half lead and paced Kenyon's attack for the evening, each chipping in 16 points in a career high effort for Maloney.

Maloney scored the Owls' first bucket with a nice three-pointer, one of his four on the night to lead the team. Bar-Cohen came back with a contested layup to get his night started as Kenyon (1-5) took a 5-3 lead just 90 seconds into the contest.

Bluffton (1-4) pulled within one in the next two minutes at 7-6, but the Owl fired back with their best offensive run of the half, ripping off a 10-2 surge in four minutes to take a nine-point lead at 17-8 with 12 minutes to play in the first half. Kenyon spread the ball during the run, as Nick Valentino, Connor Moss, and Bar-Cohen helped the visitors pull ahead.

The Beavers battled right back with some efficient shooting from the field to take a nine-point lead of their own as the first half came to a close, leading 35-26 after 20 minutes.

The home team were able to keep some distance after the break, never surrendering a lead lower than seven despite the Owls' best efforts to spark a comeback. With 5:53 left to play in the game, the Beavers' lead had ballooned up to 13.

Maloney was part of the charge to bring Kenyon back in the mix, as he hit two threes to shrink the deficit to 70-74 with 1:12 to play. Nick Nelson also hit two big shots while Marius Mazeika and Valentino each got involved in the 14-4 run. It ended up being not enough, however, as the Beavers charged to a 9-4 run in the final minute of the game to take the contest.

As a team, the Owls shot 49.2 percent from the field and 35 percent from three. They won the rebound battle 39-34 and dominated the points in the paint 42-24.

Bar-Cohen and Maloney each finished with 16 points. Along with the new career high in points for the first-year, he also added best marks in field goals made (5) and three pointers made (4). Valentino and Mazeika each found double figures, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively.

Kenyon's record drops to 1-5 with the loss. The Owls will take a short break for the holiday and return to the court on Sunday, December 1 at 2:00 pm to take on Otterbein University from Westerville, Ohio.
