Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Kenyon cashes in with win over Purchase

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Getting healthier each day, the Kenyon College men's basketball team continued to show persistence and strength in Monday's 73-64 victory over the Purchase College Panthers. The win, which came in the consolation game of the two-day New York University Holiday Tournament, sealed a third-place finish for the Owls.

Kenyon (2-9) played the majority of its first 10 games with about 40 percent of its players injured. A few of those players are now getting healthy, making their way onto the court and making a difference in what could be a turnaround as the calendar flips.

Against the Panthers, the Owls held the lead for more than 95 percent of the game and that started right from the tip-off, as the Purple and White used eight points from Marius Mazeika and a three-pointer from Connor Moss to race out to a 16-5 lead.

That 11-point margin would be Kenyon's best in the first half. Purchase slowly chipped away at its deficit. Matthew Phillips led the charge with nine points in his first 16 minutes of work. His efforts never gave the Panthers a lead, but did manage to tie the game up twice before Kenyon took a 36-32 edge into halftime.

The second half unfolded in a similar fashion, as Kenyon stormed back onto the hardwood and took full control. The Owls put together a 21-6 run over the first eight minutes of the half and took a commanding 19-point lead. During the run, Jackson Maloney tallied eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Mazeika, who ended up leading all scorers with 19 points, snapped in another three-ball and added three free throws.

The Kenyon double-digit lead held up for most of the remainder of the game, although the Panthers did manage to cut it down to six points with about a minute-and-a-half left. The Owls, however, put a bow on things when Gefen Bar-Cohen drained a three-pointer and followed up with a pair of free throws on the next trip down the court.

Bar-Cohen, who yesterday became the latest 1,000-point scorer in Kenyon history, poured in 13 against Purchase and also tied Charlie Heywood and Nick Nelson for the team lead with eight rebounds. Kenyon, which out-rebounded Purchase, 42-37, has now out-rebounded its opponent in eight of 11 games.

Nelson also contributed seven points and four assists, while Maloney racked up 15 points.

For Purchase (4-6), Phillips did not score in the second half. Chad Duke ended up leading the team with 11 points, while Rashid Nikiema chipped in with 10.

Next up, the Owls will play their first home game in more than a month. They'll host rival Denison University on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
