Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls build leads, but fall to Bishops in NCAC opener

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's basketball team had flashes of success in Wednesday night's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular season opener on the road against Ohio Wesleyan, building leads at multiple points throughout the game. However, the Bishops surged ahead in the second half to take the game 84-73.

First-year Marius Mazeika led the Owls with 17 points and senior Sam Lieberman chipped in a career-high 16 to help the visitors build two separate six point leads at key points in the game, but it wasn't enough to close the contest down the stretch.

Kenyon's (1-7, 0-1 NCAC) first significant lead came in the latter portion of the first half, battling back after Ohio Wesleyan jumped out to an early advantage. The Bishops fired a 13-to-3 run in the contest's first three minutes, but the Owls settled in and responded with a nice stretch fueled by Mazeika and Lieberman.

Through the next ten minutes of play, the visitors would slowly claw back into the contest and build a sizable lead, thanks in part to 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) shooting from the field and hitting four threes. Lieberman nailed two of those threes to bring the team within one at the 15:05 mark, as he and Mazieka each added eight points in the 29-13 run to put the Owls ahead 32-26 with 6:22 to play in the first.

The Bishops punched back in a big way to end the half, rattling off a 14-5 run in five minutes of play to take a 40-37 lead into halftime. Both squads shot well to open the game, as the hosts went 51.6 percent from the floor and the visitors shot 48.3 percent.

Gefen Bar-Cohen began to heat up in a big way after halftime, leading the Owls with nine points in the final 20 minutes. He hit a nice layup and Lieberman buried two more threes, part of a 75 percent shooting day, to help Kenyon construct another six point lead, a 51-45 mark with 14:25 left to play to cap a 14-5 run.

As the second frame reached the ten minute mark, Ohio Wesleyan (4-3, 1-0 NCAC) went on a massive run to essentially ice the game. The Bishops shot 66.6 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from beyond the arch to spark a 32-17 run in the final ten minutes of play.

Despite a close game for 30 minutes, the Owls faced a ten point deficit from the five minute mark until the final buzzer, ending the game 84-73.

Following Mazeika and Lieberman on the stat sheet was Bar-Cohen, who added 13 points and a team high four assists. Charlie Heywood and Murathan Kocaman helped lead a 37-29 rebound edge, each grabbing six.

The loss drops Kenyon's record to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC. The Owls have another conference road test on Saturday, December 7, taking on DePauw University at 7:00 pm.
